Does Boruto have enough manga material for a new season? The anime’s future, explored

Although it has been a while since the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime concluded, fans are eagerly anticipating its potential return in the future. The series seemingly came to a close due to a shortage of source material, so realistically, the only possibility for its revival would be if there is enough source material available.

Since the anime concluded in March 2023, it has been more than a year since Studio Pierrot ceased production on the series. Therefore, the manga has surely released enough chapters for a potential new season. With that in mind, what can viewers anticipate from a potential new season?

This article may include spoilers from the Boruto manga.

Indeed, the Boruto anime possesses sufficient source material to support a new season, as long as Studio Pierrot follows through with its intentions to produce seasonal anime.

As many anime enthusiasts are aware, Studio Pierrot is renowned for its extensive list of popular anime series such as Naruto, Bleach, Black Clover, and Boruto. However, in response to the ever-evolving demands of the anime industry, the executives at Studio Pierrot came to the realization that seasonal anime with exceptional animation was in high demand. As a result, the animation studio introduced a new subsidiary known as PIERROT FILMS.

PIERROT FILMS has announced their plans to prioritize producing seasonal anime with top-notch animation that can be completed in a shorter timeframe. This confirms the company’s preference for the seasonal format over long-running series, as seen in their release of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War in segments.

This release pattern is advantageous for the Boruto series and should enable PIERROT FILMS to create a season with fewer episodes for the anime.

It is evident from the comparison between the anime and manga that the anime series finished animating the manga around the beginning of chapter 68.

Knowing that the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga only consists of 80 chapters, it can be concluded that there are approximately 13 chapters left to be adapted. With each manga chapter being able to translate seamlessly into an anime episode, it is safe to say that there is enough source material for a 12-13 episode anime adaptation.

Therefore, it is indeed true that the Boruto anime possesses sufficient source material for an additional season.

The tenth chapter of the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga series is scheduled for release soon. This chapter will provide enough source material from both manga to produce a standard 23-episode anime season, in line with industry norms.

Despite the low likelihood, PIERROT FILMS may still consider producing a single anime season that combines elements from both manga. However, it is more probable that there will only be a single-cour anime season for the series in the future. It should be noted that the animation studio is currently prioritizing Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and may also focus on the new Naruto anime and Black Clover in the near future. As a result, it could be some time before the studio is able to work on the Masashi Kishimoto series.
