Due to the suspension of premium membership functions on his account, Dr Disrespect’s YouTube channel has been restricted.
Amid the aftermath of Dr Disrespect’s admission of communicating with a minor, YouTube has taken action by limiting the access to the controversial content creator’s channel. As a result, premium memberships have been deactivated and new members are unable to join at this time.
On June 27, 2024, existing members were the first to receive emails notifying them of the change. This resulted in the halting of recurring payments and former fans were given the option to cancel their membership to Dr Disrespect’s channel.
As of now, it appears that this move is only temporary, as YouTube has promised to notify members when the function resumes. Yet, given the increasing number of allegations, it is uncertain if the account will regain its complete monetization capabilities in the near future.
Dr Disrespect’s premium memberships have been paused on YouTube.
Despite not being a partnered YouTube personality and having no exclusive deal with the video-sharing platform, Dr Disrespect’s account was still active enough to qualify for additional monetization features.
YouTube memberships offer fans the opportunity to consistently support their preferred content creators on the platform. By making recurring payments, usually with various options to choose from, devoted viewers can demonstrate their gratitude beyond just subscribing or donating directly. These memberships often come with special benefits such as badges for YouTube’s live chat, access to a members-only chat, and other exclusive perks.
Despite the fact that Dr Disrespect’s community no longer has access to any of these benefits, the membership function would serve little use at this point in time regardless due to the content creator taking an indefinite hiatus.
Dr Disrespect’s YouTube memberships were a key source of revenue for the content creator, much like Twitch subscriptions were in the past.
On June 22, 2024, former Twitch employees came forward, shedding light on the reason behind Doc’s unexpected permanent ban from the platform in 2020. The popular streamer was discovered communicating with a minor through Twitch’s Whisper messaging system.
Despite claiming that the conversations were sometimes casual and mutual, Dr Disrespect quickly acknowledged the allegations and admitted to the actions he had been accused of, acknowledging that they may have leaned too far into inappropriate territory.
Due to the admission, Doc’s reputation at the ‘tippy top’ has rapidly declined. His longtime friends have distanced themselves, sponsors have withdrawn their support, and prominent brands have publicly denounced him.
According to Ryan Wyatt, the Former Global Head of Gaming at YouTube, the recent publicized evidence has shed further light on Doc’s situation. Wyatt explains that in the past, YouTube was unable to take action without evidence. However, now that evidence has come to light, Doc can be ‘demonitized’ and ‘deplatformed’.
“With memberships paused, he declared that they are now able to take action. These initial steps mark the beginning of the process.”
