What is Dragon Age: The Veilguard About?
The 2020 trailer featuring narration from Varric indicates that players will step into the shoes of a new protagonist while departing from the previous Inquisitor.
He states, “It’s time for a fresh hero. No magical hand, no ancient prophecy,” hinting that the main character may begin as an unassuming figure in Thedas, someone they “would never suspect.”
BioWare has indicated that Solas is the Dread Wolf and provided clarity in an update: “Some regard him as an ancient elven deity, while others see him as a traitor to his people… or perhaps a savior hoping to free them at the cost of your world. His motivations remain enigmatic, and his tactics sometimes questionable, earning him a moniker as a trickster god—playing games that are dark and perilous.”
Notably, prior to the full gameplay showcase on June 11, the game was officially renamed to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
In a post, it was clarified that while Solas will have a critical role, the new title emphasizes the player’s journey and their companions, stating, “we opted for a new title since the original did not sufficiently express our emphasis on these new heroes’ stories and the unity required to save all of Thedas.”
Additionally, the announcement confirmed that players will have the opportunity to engage with “seven unique characters” serving as companions in The Veilguard.

Gameplay

The official Dragon Age landing page emphasizes a focus on building relationships and conflicts: “Friendship, intrigue, and romance flourish as you assemble diverse characters into an extraordinary team. Step into your role as the hero and provide hope in their most trying moments.”
In a blog post by BioWare General Manager Gary McKay on January 6, 2022, it was stated that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will deliver a “single-player experience grounded in consequential choices.”
In an interview with IGN, Game Director Corinne Busche confirmed that the gameplay structure will revert to the systems of Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2.
This indicates a move away from the open-world format of Inquisition, favoring a mission-based structure with smaller, focused environments contingent on current objectives.
However, Busche noted there will still be areas available for exploration, ensuring players won’t find the experience entirely linear. She observed, “The areas we explore will open up, presenting opportunities for more exploration in some cases. You’ll encounter alternate routes, puzzles, and hidden content to discover.”
Reflecting elements from the earlier installments of the series, it also shares characteristics with one of BioWare’s well-received titles: Mass Effect 2.
In this installment, the team will also see a reduction in the number of companions. Specifically, players will have access to seven companions in total.
Additionally, the party size is limited to two companions, down from the previous inclusion of three, indicating BioWare’s desire to concentrate on the series’ strengths.
