In Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, like in all fighting games, players have access to a variety of inputs and moves to help shift the balance of combat in their favor. However, mastering these actions can be quite challenging.
Whether you’re battling against Saiyans, Namekians, or even godly fusions, understanding when to defend and how to effectively counter your adversary’s strikes is crucial. Familiar mechanics such as Ki attack deflection and Sonic Sway return from the Tenkaichi trilogy, but their functionality has evolved slightly.
If you’re feeling daunted by the array of controls and wish to enhance your defensive strategy, this guide outlines the essential techniques available to you.
Dodging & Step-In Sway Techniques
Control Input: R1/RB (Basic Mode)
As is common with defensive maneuvers, dodging requires precise timing; you must hit R1/RB right before your opponent’s attack is about to hit. A successful dodge results in an evasion, creating an opportunity for you to counterattack.
Executing Step-In Sway
A more refined version of regular dodging, Step-In Sway can be performed by pressing X/A followed by R1/RB. Similar to Beam Deflects, this maneuver carries risks; if not timed properly, you’ll incur full damage from the incoming attack.
If you’re unsure about the timing, relying on blocking early in the game may be safer. However, be cautious—overusing blocks could prompt your adversary to initiate a Guard Break, so it’s essential to vary your approach.
Beam Deflection Techniques
Control Input: Triangle+Circle/Y+B
It’s vital to understand that deflecting beams isn’t without cost. Executing a beam deflection uses up two bars from your character’s Ki gauge, so ensure your reserves are sufficient before attempting to deflect an attack like Vegeta’s Galick Gun.
Timing is also essential; pressing the designated button sequence just before an opponent releases their beam is key to consistent success.
Mastering this timing will take practice, so until you can regularly deflect beams with confidence, utilizing blocks provides a safer but less aggressive option.
Performing Sonic Sway
Control Input: Hold Circle/Hold B (Basic Mode)
Out of the three techniques discussed, Sonic Sway is the most complex, requiring both precise timing and the ability to anticipate when your opponent might present an opportunity. By employing Super Perception (see input) at the last moment against a Rush Attack, you can activate Sonic Sway. You’ll know you executed it correctly when unique visual and audible indicators play.
The reward for successful execution? Once Sonic Sway is activated, you’ll have a chance to evade the Rush Attack and launch a counter, simultaneously depleting your opponent’s Ki. Additionally, you can use Sonic Sway against specific Ki Blasts, though this will also cost you two Ki gauges.
