Dragon Ball wishes are just a scam and Granolah’s wish proves it

Despite the Dragon Ball franchise heavily relying on dragon balls, as its title suggests, a closer look at the plot reveals that these wish-granting orbs are not as infallible as the characters believe them to be. This is particularly evident in the Granolah the Survivor Saga, with the wish made by Granolah.

Despite being the last of the Cerealian race, Granolah was determined to avenge his people by seeking revenge against the Saiyans and killing the tyrant Frieza. In order to achieve this, he made a wish to the eternal dragon to become the strongest fighter in the universe. However, his battles against Goku, Vegeta and Gas proved to be inconclusive, leading him to believe that the dragon balls’ promises were nothing but a scam.

Despite the effort required to collect the Dragon Balls, their wishes are not foolproof as they can be overwritten. As any fan knows, acquiring all seven orbs can be a daunting challenge, especially without the aid of a dragon radar. Thus, if one were to make a wish to the Eternal Dragon, there should be no possibility for another person to overwrite it.

Nonetheless, the dragon balls do not operate in this manner, as the dragon can solely fulfill a wish based on the current state of affairs. This effectively implies that one could potentially negate someone else’s wish by making their own.

It is clear that the Granolah the Survivor Saga showcases this theme. Throughout the arc, Granolah seeks revenge against the Cerealians and seeks to destroy the Saiyan race. In order to achieve this goal, Granolah strives to become the most powerful fighter in the universe.

As expected, the wish was fulfilled. Granolah surpassed Goku and Vegeta in strength. Sadly, Granolah’s reign as the strongest warrior was short-lived.

As both Goku and Vegeta received either zenkai boosts or a new power-up during their fight, this explains why they were able to surpass Granolah’s power level. Since the wish was granted before the fight, any changes in their power levels during the fight could have resulted in them exceeding Granolah’s strength.

Despite Goku and Vegeta appearing to be gaining strength and closing in on Granolah, their fight was interrupted by Monaito. In the midst of this, the Heeters and Gas arrived to challenge Granolah. It was their ultimate desire for Gas to become the most powerful fighter in the entire universe.

Despite having already granted the wish, the dragon still fulfilled the new one. As the series clarifies, the new wish essentially replaced the previous one, resulting in Gas becoming the strongest fighter in the universe. Although the plot development is logical, it does not seem just.

Despite the fact that the orbs granted people’s wishes, they could be seen as a scam because the granted wish would only last until someone else overwrote it. Although this was a rare occurrence, the mere chance of it happening still gave off a sense of dishonesty.
