It would be an understatement to say that Dragonball Evolution was a disaster. James Marsters has admitted that the success of Fast and Furious only emphasized the failure of their film.
As we approach Dragon Ball Daima, it’s crucial to reflect on Goku’s struggles in defeating existential threats to not only Earth, but the entire universe. While Dragon Ball has delivered some of the greatest anime of all time, it has also presented us with some major calamities.
When Hollywood attempted to replicate the success of the Z Fighters, their live-action film gained notoriety for its poor adaptation. James Marsters, who played the villain Piccolo, vividly remembers the film’s opening night.
During an interview on Inside of You with Michel Rosenbaum, he recalled the experience of going to see the film on opening night with his son and daughter. The theater was packed with teenage boys and their younger brothers, with a distinct aroma of body odor and hot dogs. Despite this, he described the atmosphere as wonderful and exclaimed, “It’s a hit, it’s a hit!”
Unfortunately, the ex-Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor spoke prematurely. “A voice inside me chimed in, and I thought, ‘This seems too good to be true,’ so I turned to the person next to me and inquired, ‘Is this Dragonball Evolution?’”Marsters remembered.
As he continued listing off movies such as Fast and Furious, Jesus, and Dragon Ball, I couldn’t help but feel anxious. Getting up from my seat, I prayed that at least a quarter of the audience had gone to the correct theater.
“I am currently signed on for three films, and I have ambitious ideas for the remaining movies. As we entered, there were a total of five individuals, including the three of us.”
Despite high hopes, Dragonball Evolution only managed to earn a global total of $56 million, greatly disappointing and ending any potential future projects. The film was directed by James Wong and starred Justin Chatwin as Goku, a disappointment for all involved in their respective careers.
Marsters admits feeling embarrassed in the presence of his children, but his son, a huge fan, enjoyed the feature, providing some sense of relief. Nowadays, he discourages people from seeking it out. “If anyone hasn’t seen it, I hope it remains that way,”he concludes.
