No, you don’t need to play the first game to fully enjoy Dragon’s Dogma 2. This means you can launch the RPG and understand the main story twists while having little knowledge of 2012’s Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.

The developers wanted the sequel to be accessible to newcomers and they succeeded, in part, by making your character have amnesia, as game director Hideaki Itsuno said.

During an interview with GamesRadar+, Itsuno said, “The game starts with a main character who has lost his memory”, allowing the NPCs around you to give you the necessary information: “the characters around you explain things to update you. So even if it’s your first time in Dragon’s Dogma, you can go in safely.”

It’s also important to note that the game takes place in a parallel world to the 2012 original, providing a perfect entry point for new players.
