“Drunk-Driving is Murder”: Criticisms Intensify Amid BTS’s Suga & Kim Ho-joong’s Controversies

On the 26th of the month, “Hidden Eye”on MBC Every1 featured a segment on arrests made for drunk driving, highlighting the dangers of this offense.

MC Kim Sung-joo emphasized the severity of drunk driving by comparing it to theft and pointing out that the recidivism rate for this offense has surpassed 40% since 2021, making it a pressing societal concern.

In reaction to this, Kim Dong-hyun contended that drunk driving should be considered a serious crime, equating it to murder. He emphasized the need for harsher punishments, pointing out that many people have a nonchalant attitude towards the matter, believing that they are not at risk. He proposed that the use of a designated driver should be obligatory.

“You also remarked, “Drunk driving appears to develop into a habit,”to which Lee Si-won chimed in, “Considering the recidivism rate of 40%, it feels like a type of addiction.”

The segment not only focused on drunk driving checkpoints, but also highlighted instances of drivers attempting to evade arrest by fleeing the scene. It included footage of a driver who was caught driving in the wrong direction while under the influence.

In the world of entertainment, the topic of drunk driving has gained significant attention in recent times.

Authorities have reported that Park Sang-min has been indicted by the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office in Anyang for breaking traffic laws (drunk driving) but will not be detained.

In February 2011, he was pulled over in Gangnam, Seoul for driving with a blood alcohol level above the limit for license suspension. Back in August 1997, he was also arrested for causing an accident while under the influence in the same district.
