Dune Director Attributes Franchise Issues to One Star Wars Film

Denis Villeneuve stands out as a visionary in the realm of cinema, particularly known for his masterful adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. However, despite his skills, the esteemed director has no interest in taking the helm of a Star Wars feature film, and one specific installment is the reason behind his reluctance.

The Dune-Star Wars Connection

Frank Herbert’s Dune is often regarded as a cornerstone of science fiction literature, shaping the genre significantly. Interestingly, its influence can be seen throughout the Star Wars saga. For instance, Tatooine closely resembles Arrakis, with both worlds revolving around the valuable substance known as spice. Additionally, concepts like the Empire parallel Herbert’s Imperium, and one might even draw a comparison between Anakin Skywalker and Paul Atreides as iconic figures of their respective narratives.

While the Star Wars franchise rapidly gained global fame, Dune experienced a tumultuous journey, marked by the less-than-stellar adaptations from Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Lynch before finding its ideal realization with Villeneuve. Today, thanks to Dune: Part Two and the upcoming Dune: Prophecy on HBO, the franchise’s popularity has soared to unprecedented heights.

Dismay Over Return of the Jedi

Despite his admiration for the Star Wars universe during his youth, Villeneuve has expressed that he would not consider directing a film within that galaxy. His disappointment stems notably from Return of the Jedi, which he believes significantly altered the trajectory of the franchise.

Reflecting on his childhood experiences, Villeneuve shared on The Town podcast: “I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet.” His appreciation for Star Wars peaked with The Empire Strikes Back, which he recalls watching countless times, describing it as a traumatic yet enthralling experience.

However, his excitement took a downturn following the third chapter. “The problem is that it all derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi,” he lamented. When reminiscing, he recalled a period when he and a close friend were so frustrated that they contemplated taking a cab to Los Angeles to confront George Lucas. The inclusion of Ewoks particularly left a lasting sour taste for him, as he believed the film shifted toward a more lighthearted, child-focused narrative.

A Clear Denial for Future Projects

Villeneuve further articulated his stance on the franchise, suggesting that he perceives Star Wars as having become too “crystalized” within its own established lore. He remarked, “It seemed like a recipe, no more surprises,” which contributes to his disinterest in directing within that universe.

For those who may wonder about his interest in other franchises, Villeneuve clarifies, “I’m not a Trekkie,” distancing himself from the idea of taking on Star Trek either.
