The Fremen’s world is being brought to life by a YouTube channel that has set out on a mission to produce functioning stillsuits from the world of Dune.
Hacksmith Industries is renowned for transforming fictional concepts from movies, TV series, and entertainment into tangible possibilities. The technology portrayed in Dune, which includes interstellar travel and advanced equipment, is set millions of years in the future and is unlike anything found on Earth.
The Fremen, who reside in the perilous deserts of Arrakis, rely heavily on their technology to make the most of their scarce resources in order to survive the harsh conditions. Their ingenious invention, the stillsuit, serves this purpose by trapping the body’s moisture and transforming both sweat and potentially urine into potable water.
The stillsuits are crucial for the Fremen’s survival on their home planet and provide them with an advantage over rivals such as the Harkanonnen. However, it remains to be seen if these suits are practical in real-life situations.
Hacksmith Industries on YouTube accepted the challenge of developing the science behind the functional suits. A major obstacle was finding a way to collect and convert body moisture into drinkable fluids. To solve this, they utilized a thermoelectric cooler.
The device’s cooling components produce either ice or moisture and are linked to tubing that circulates the user’s breath to keep them cool. The water collected from the cooling unit is then channeled into a backpack through a filtered tube, allowing the wearer to drink from it.
The employees at Hacksmith Industries have proven their resilience by drinking their own sweat on numerous occasions. However, the taste of the resulting liquid, described as “warm and sweet,”made me feel queasy just thinking about it.
The audience was thoroughly impressed with their creation, and this was only Part 1.
One commenter expressed their enthusiasm for the project by saying, “I can’t wait to see the final result! It’s definitely the kind of thing I’d be eager to finish and drink my own sweat.”
“A different fan expressed, “According to film theory, it is feasible and now Hacksmith is proposing to create it!”
Upon seeing the impressive functionality of Hacksmith Industries’ still suit, another fan posed the question, “Could this technology potentially be useful for working in the desert?”The fan also suggested incorporating a method for circulating air from the cool side of the suit’s TEC, as well as adding small solar panels to the shoulders.
Similar to the actual deserts of Jordan and Saudi Arabia that served as the inspiration for Arrakis, there are very few accessible sources of water. This makes survival in the expansive deserts nearly impossible. While a stillsuit would greatly aid in this challenge, the technology developed by Hacksmith Industries is far from flawless or environmentally sustainable like in the world of Dune.
You can find information about Dune, such as where to stream the second installment and other recommended movies to watch. Additionally, there are resources available to explain elements of Dune, including what Spice is, what language the Fremen speak, and the significance of the Water of Life.
