2. What Is the Storyline of Dune: Prophecy?

The Dune universe is extensive, with tales reaching every corner of the universe and encompassing numerous centuries.

Frank Herbert’s novels are renowned for creating a highly intricate and immersive fictional world, rivaling only J.R.R. Tolkien’s world-building for Middle Earth.

The events of Dune: Prophecy occur approximately 10,000 years prior to the birth of the prophesied Kwisatz Haderach, Paul Atreides, and the events of Dune.

The events of the book occur following the Butlerian Jihad, a war that annihilates all forms of computers and advanced technology.

The story centers around Griffin and Valya, the eldest children of the Harkonnen family. They serve as the inspiration for the main characters in the series as they work towards restoring their family’s wealth and reputation. Along the way, they also play a significant role in the rise of the Sisterhood, also known as the Bene Gesserit, in the known universe.

The Bene Gesserit, a group of individuals in Dune, wield immense power. They can be likened to space witches or monks, as they meticulously strategize and manipulate events to shape their own fate and exert authority over the politics and power of the universe.

The initial film features Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the Bene Gessirit, including the Reverend Mother (Charlotte Rampling) and Paul’s mother (Rebecca Ferguson). The upcoming series will delve deeper into their origins and expand upon their mythology.

According to Max’s official synopsis for the show, here is what was released:

Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, the hero of the 1965 novel Dune, the series will follow two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.”

Cast and Crew for Dune: Prophecy

The first Dune movie’s cast was a major advantage, and Dune: Prophecy is following suit by assembling a remarkable ensemble of actors.

Valya Harkonnen, a strong woman rising to prominence in the Sisterhood, will be played by Emily Watson, who is most recognized for her roles in Punch-Drunk Love and Chornobyl.

Jodhi May, known for her role in The Witcher, will play Empress Natalya, who becomes connected to hundreds of worlds through her marriage to the Emperor.

Mark Strong (Shazam!, Sherlock Holmes) portrays Emperor Javicco Corrino, who comes from a line of prestigious European rulers and is responsible for governing the Imperium during a time of turmoil.

The cast of Vikings has recently welcomed Travis Fimmel, who will portray a charismatic warrior seeking the Emperor’s trust, even if it means betraying the Sisterhood.

Tula Harkonnen, portrayed by Olivia Williams (known for her role in The Sixth Sense), is an original member of both the House Harkonnen and Bene Gesserit factions.

Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Tabu, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, and Chloe Lea, as well as other actors, will hold pivotal roles in the series.

4. About Dune: Prophecy

The upcoming American science fiction television series, Dune: Prophecy, is set in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert and will be streaming on Max. It explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful sisterhood who undergo intense physical and mental training to gain extraordinary abilities. The events take place around 10,000 years before the events of Herbert’s novel Dune (1965) and serve as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (2021). Legendary Television is producing the series, with showrunner, writer, and executive producer Alison Schapker at the helm.

In 2016, Legendary Entertainment acquired the television and film rights for the Dune franchise and subsequently initiated the development of a two-part film adaptation with Villeneuve as the director. In 2019, Legendary Television commissioned a spin-off project from Villeneuve’s films as well.
