Dune: Prophecy showrunner, Alison Schapker, has shared thrilling updates for the series’ fans, indicating that Season 2 will bring viewers “boots on the ground”in the iconic setting of Arrakis.
This year has been particularly monumental for the Dune franchise. The release of Dune: Part Two in March raked in approximately $714 million at the global box office while receiving widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.
Following this success, the spinoff series Dune: Prophecy debuted on Max in November. Throughout its six episodes, the show explores the intricate origins of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, enriching the Dune lore.
For those catching up, our recap of the Season 1 finale, complete with an ending explanation, is available here. As the dust settles on Season 1, Schapker and her team are already focused on what’s next for the series with Season 2.
Anticipating Season 2: A Journey to Arrakis
Arrakis stands as a central element in the Dune narrative, and while references to the planet have been made in Dune: Prophecy, it is set to take center stage in the upcoming season. During a recent press conference, which was highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter, Schapker explained that the first season presented Arrakis’ influence from a distance through themes such as the economics of spice and the psychological impact of visions and nightmares tied to Desmond’s past.
“[We’ll actually go] and put boots on the ground at this incredibly overdetermined and sort of almost mythic Dune space that we know very well, but we sort of kept it at distance the whole season.”
Additionally, Schapker stated that Season 2 will continue to explore the rivalry between Valya (played by Emily Mortimer) and Desmond (played by Travis Fimmel), particularly focusing on Desmond’s dramatic Sandworm narrative.
“I think it’s very significant that Valya’s back there,” Schapker noted. “She’s back kind of at the origin point of Desmond, where he emerged with a story and a myth: ‘I’m from Arrakis, and I was swallowed by a worm and I survived after my whole regiment was killed.’”
Schapker teased that Valya’s return to Arrakis will reveal more about Desmond’s past and their fierce rivalry. “All I would say is, I think Valya is there… to find out a lot more, given that she is back where Desmond sort of emerged as an adversary. And [it will] be interesting to see what she finds out there.”
