Fans of The Legend of Zelda are already dissecting the reveal trailer for Echoes of Wisdom in search of clues about its placement within the notoriously complex Zelda timeline.
Despite being announced just recently during the Nintendo Direct on June 18, fans are determined to uncover the mysteries of Echoes of Wisdom.
Some people are already sharing their in-depth analyses of the trailer, including its locations and character designs, in an attempt to understand where the Zelda-led adventure fits in the intricate and diverging Zelda timeline.
As highlighted by multiple Reddit users, the new game seems to utilize the map from both A Link to the Past on the SNES and its sequel A Link Between Worlds on the Nintendo 3DS.

Another Reddit user made an educated guess that Echoes of Wisdom will build upon the existing maps of those games “by adding a new volcano northwest of Hyrule Castle and expanding the western areas as well.”
Furthermore, they propose that the game “has the potential to serve as a continuation of either A Link to the Past and Between Worlds, or even Link’s Awakening, if it features the same incarnation of Link.”
This caused a commenter to share their theories, suggesting three potential explanations. The first is that Echoes of Wisdom serves as “the beginning of the Downfall Timeline”and occurs prior to A Link to the Past. The second possibility is that it is set between Link’s Awakening and A Link Between Worlds. Lastly, the third theory proposes that it takes place after ALBW and Tri Force Heroes.
The user also speculated that the character designs suggest these are updated versions of Link and Zelda. They pointed out that while the Links from ALTTP and ALBW both have yellow brims on their hats, this one has a green brim.
If this is true, it would mean that Echoes of Wisdom takes place on the Fallen Hero timeline, where Ganon emerged victorious over Link at the conclusion of Ocarina of Time.
The Zelda series is renowned for its intricate timeline, encompassing numerous games and spanning thousands of years of Hyrulian history. This timeline includes direct sequels, prequels, and a handful of canon spinoffs.
Initially intended as a private internal design document, it became publicly available with the publication of Hyrule Historia in 2011.
We can anticipate gaining further knowledge as the September 26, 2024 release date for Echoes of Wisdom draws near. However, based on our current understanding of the Zelda timeline, it is highly likely that the game will generate just as many inquiries as it resolves.
