In a recent interview regarding Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, creator Eiichiro Oda has hinted at “surprising elements”set to enthrall viewers in Season 2. He elaborated on the formidable challenges awaiting Luffy as they navigate the treacherous waters of the Grand Line.
Currently, the filming for Season 2 is taking place in South Africa, where Oda himself visited the set in Cape Town. During this visit, he engaged in an insightful conversation with Iñaki Godoy, who portrays Luffy. Notably, the duo conducted their interview in Japanese, showcasing Godoy’s dedication to the language since he has been learning it since January.
Why Sailing the Grand Line is a Daunting Task in Season 2
Godoy initiated the discussion by asking Oda about the reasoning behind the Grand Line’s notorious difficulty, mentioning his own exhaustion while filming those sequences. In response, Oda stated, “In that universe, the Grand Line is the harshest of the seas. We need to shock audiences. That’s why there are giants, and of course, lots of bounty hunters. This needs to be a season full of new, surprising elements. That’s why it’s more challenging.”
Moreover, Godoy inquired about Luffy’s character inspiration. Oda offered a profound insight, describing Luffy as “an ideal child”who represents the freedom often lost when entering adulthood. He continued, “When you become an adult and join a company, you can’t always do what you want. Entering society often means losing freedom. Luffy has a child’s heart, so he does whatever he wants. That aspect is probably what makes Luffy so appealing to adults toiling in society and children about to enter it.”
