Elden Ring Considered for Next Universes Beyond Set by MTG Players

Elden Ring’s popularity is soaring even higher due to Shadow of the Erdtree, and many MTG players believe it would be an ideal candidate for a Universes Beyond expansion.

Over the years, Universes Beyond sets for Magic: The Gathering have achieved great success, with minimal errors. The crossover brand has experienced significant growth, starting with a few cards featuring The Walking Dead and expanding to a larger scale.

Currently, Magic’s overall strategy includes featuring multiple Commander decks and even entire Universes Beyond sets. Universes Beyond is expanding its reach by incorporating renowned franchises such as Lord of the Rings, Fallout, the upcoming Final Fantasy set, and others.

The upcoming Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed release on July 5th will provide a unique challenge for the line, featuring unconventional booster packs and a smaller set compared to previous releases. Many MTG enthusiasts have already expressed interest in the next potential crossover for Universes Beyond, with Elden Ring being a popular choice among fans.

Despite having big shoes to fill as a spiritual successor to Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, Sekiro, and the beloved Bloodborne, Elden Ring has proven itself to be a standout game.

Similar to MTG, FromSoft’s challenging action RPGs have broken out of their shell of obscurity, transforming into powerful and significant titles that cannot be overlooked, much like a blooming Malenia.

Despite having a loyal fan base of players who understand and appreciate the unique qualities of Magic and the Souls series, these games have recently garnered more widespread popularity by introducing new ways for a wider audience to access them.

Despite keeping the punishing difficulty of the Souls formula, Elden Ring has addressed sources of frustration for new players, such as long and winding runbacks. On the other hand, MTG has successfully attracted a diverse new audience through Universes Beyond, converting existing franchise fans into enthusiastic new TCG players.

The timing is ideal for an Elden Ring Universes Beyond set to be revealed. Despite the passage of time since its release, the game’s remarkable reputation remains unwavering. Additionally, the arrival of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is attracting a multitude of new and returning fans, refocusing attention on The Lands Between.

The Shadow of the Erdtree could also function as a distinct MTG Secret Lair release, following the same format as Fallout’s supplementary set, and receiving a similarly unique DLC treatment.

Similarly to the successful Universes Beyond sets such as Fallout and Doctor Who, Elden Ring offers an abundance of material that is easily adaptable into MTG cards. With its vast size and intricate world, the game provides a plethora of characters, locations, weapons, artifacts, and other elements to be transformed into cards.

Fans of MTG have been suggesting additional aspects of Elden Ring that would seamlessly integrate into Universes Beyond and the overall world of Magic.

According to a Reddit user, the Elden Ring MTG set includes “a comprehensive color scheme”consisting of Blue (Glintstone), White (Erdtree), Green (Crucible), Red (Magma/Fell God), and Black (Destined Death/those who live in death). Furthermore, the lore of the game incorporates a significant amount of multicolor elements where these regions intersect.

It is intriguing to observe MTG’s designers’ approach to incorporating Universes Beyond elements within MTG’s color identity. A user has convincingly proposed the Elden Ring factions that align perfectly with each mana color.

One individual suggested that a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and FromSoft could result in a plethora of exciting crossovers, as they believed all of FromSoftware’s games would be well-suited for UB sets. Considering Innistrad’s strong focus on Gothic and Lovecraftian themes, it would be an ideal location for a line of Bloodborne-inspired alternate cards, similar to the Godzilla cards found in Ikoria.

Despite its reputation as a masterpiece, Elden Ring is unlikely to fade from players’ memories anytime soon. Even if Wizards of the Coast does not currently have a collaboration planned, there is no better time than now to start considering the possibilities.
