The reveal of the Nameless King, a prominent boss from Dark Souls 3, in the newly announced game Elden Ring: Nightreign has taken fans by surprise during The Game Awards 2024. Many enthusiasts had set their sights on updates concerning Bloodborne, but what they received was an unexpected announcement that broadened the franchise’s universe.
The trailer unveiled a co-op-centric spin-off that transports players back to a familiar yet altered version of the Lands Between, cloaked in a mysterious blue mist. Players, known as Tarnished, are tasked with confronting the Night Lord in this intriguing new chapter. The gameplay showcased a mix of both iconic returning bosses and fresh adversaries, yet none caused as much excitement as the Nameless King.
The Nameless King is a legendary figure in the Dark Souls series.
The Significance of the Nameless King’s Appearance in Elden Ring
The community’s response sparked numerous theories surrounding the inclusion of this iconic character. Some players speculate this could be the first sign of a crossover between Dark Souls and Bloodborne. One Reddit user expressed their disbelief, stating, “A crossover? (very big) reference boss? I literally can’t think of anything else, brain is mush.”
Others have voiced their thoughts on the nature of the relationship between Elden Ring and Dark Souls. One player remarked, “I’ve never backed down from the idea that Elden Ring could be either a distant prequel or sequel to Dark Souls, even after they ‘confirmed’ it wasn’t.”
In contrast, some gamers have voiced caution, suggesting that FromSoftware may be reusing assets to enrich the enemy roster without any significant lore crossover. “I’d guess this is a case of reused assets since they did that with the Thralls move set from DS3 but they were reskinned. This is literally just the Nameless King,” stated a player.
Yet, given Hidetaka Miyazaki’s meticulous design philosophy, it’s plausible that the Nameless King’s return was intentional and emblematic of a greater narrative purpose—he may not be the only fan favorite making a comeback. While FromSoftware often re-skins various enemies and bosses, the inclusion of a monumental character like the Nameless King would necessitate a more profound justification.
Originating from the rich lore of Dark Souls, the Nameless King is seen as a son of Gwyn, the First Lord of Cinder, who defied his godlike lineage by siding with the Ancient Dragons, ultimately outliving his kin, only to fall to the Ashen One in Dark Souls 3.
Interestingly, Elden Ring’s ruling family also waged war against a race of Ancient Dragons, opening the door for potential narrative connections between the two games. While it’s conceivable that the Nameless King might appear in Elden Ring: Nightreign without ties to Dark Souls, in Souls-like games, bosses typically hold a thematic significance regarding their presence.
At this point, these discussions remain speculative, yet they speak to the excitement and anticipation among fans from both franchises. As the gaming community awaits more information, one can’t help but echo the familiar rallying cry: Praises to the Sun!
