During the Cannes Film Festival on May 20th, Max Movie had the opportunity to speak with Ko Kyung-beom, head of CJ ENM’s film division. During the conversation, Ko announced that Emma Stone has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Hollywood remake of ‘Save the Green Planet!’, which will be titled ‘Bugonia’ and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Production is expected to commence in July.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos and lead actress Emma Stone were both invited to the 77th Cannes Film Festival competition section for their film “Kind of Kindness” , which had its official premiere on May 17th.
This will be the fourth time the two have joined forces for a feature film, after working together on “The Favourite”in 2019, as well as this year’s films “Poor Things”and “Kind of Kindness”. Their latest collaboration, “Bugonia”, has now been added to the list.
In 2003, Jang Joon-hwan made his directorial debut with “Save the Green Planet!”which featured Shin Ha-kyun and Baek Yoon-sik. This dark comedy revolves around Byung-gu (Shin Ha-kyun), a man who becomes convinced that the CEO of a chemical company (Baek Yoon-sik) is an extraterrestrial and proceeds to abduct and torment him.
Despite only drawing in 70,000 viewers upon its initial release and being deemed a box office flop, it eventually gained recognition for its creative storytelling and unpredictable conclusion, earning the reputation of a “tragic masterpiece.”
The film’s artistry was acclaimed, as it received awards at multiple international film festivals including the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
The film adaptation “Bugonia”centers around two individuals consumed by a conspiracy theory. They are convinced that the CEO of a pharmaceutical corporation is an extraterrestrial set on annihilating the planet. In their efforts to expose the truth, they plot to abduct the CEO.
CJ ENM announced that Will Tracy, a writer for HBO’s “Succession”, has joined the script development team. They also mentioned that several renowned Hollywood actors have shown interest in being a part of this remake project.
The Hollywood Reporter, the official newsletter of the film festival, also announced that Lanthimos’ latest film at Cannes had just been released, and that his next film, “Bugonia,”would star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
