The KCON LA 2024 festival, which took place in late July, was a lively display of K-pop talent with a varied selection of performers spanning three days.
One of the most memorable moments of the event was the highly acclaimed boy group ENHYPEN, who captivated their fans with their dynamic performance and charming interactions with other groups.
The festival, which is renowned for its vibrant energy and opportunities for fans to interact with idols, featured numerous thrilling moments such as collaborations among members from different groups, which included dance challenge videos.
A video that has caught considerable notice showcases ENHYPEN together with KATSEYE, a recently formed girl group.
KATSEYE was revealed as one of the opening performers for the last day of the festival. Their hit track “Touch”gained widespread attention, and they were also given the chance to team up with ENHYPEN’s Heeseung and Ni-ki for a dance challenge video.
The TikTok video, which quickly went viral, featured the four idols showcasing their choreography skills to KATSEYE’s popular hit single.
The initial enthusiasm of fans was swiftly replaced by mixed responses.
Despite the excitement from many over the cross-group interaction, there were some viewers who critiqued ENHYPEN’s choreography performance.
Some fans expressed their discomfort with the dance on social media, noting a perceived awkwardness and criticizing what they saw as a “masculinization”of the choreography.
One Twitter user remarked, “I’m tired of boys acting like they can’t do girl group dances. What’s the point of participating in challenges if you’re going to half-heartedly perform the dance? Show some maturity,”while another chimed in, “Is it really that difficult to just learn the choreography?”
The critique centered on the alleged lack of dedication and deviation from KATSEYE’s original dance style.
Despite this, some fans stood up for ENHYPEN, highlighting the fact that the video was shot in a limited space, which could have impacted their performance.
Furthermore, it was pointed out that previous boy groups have also made comparable adaptations in the past. Fans defended this by stating that the backlash appeared excessive, taking into account the video’s context.
Despite the fact that the KATSEYE team intended to create a (bg) version featuring all members, some fans still chose to criticize ENHYPEN. One person expressed, “It’s hard to accept that there were those who bashed them over a simple TIKTOK video shot in a hallway.”
