In any action-adventure game, effective use of the Save function is critical to preserving your progress. This holds true for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, although the saving feature isn’t immediately available to players.
Below, we outline when and how to save your game in AC: Shadows.
How to Save Your Game in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows

Players can start saving their game only after reaching the mission titled ‘Fight of the Kakushiba Ikki’ during the prologue. In the initial brief missions, such as ‘The Lord’s Favor’ or ‘Spirit of a Warrior’, the game relies on autosave functionality. You can still access these save points if you need to stop your gameplay during this segment.
Once you progress to the cutscene introducing Naoe and begin the ‘Fight of the Kakushiba Ikki’ mission, you can save your game by pressing the designated button for the Menu/Start/Options. This action will make the ‘Save’ option visible in your menu.
However, during the mission titled ‘An Unpayable Debt’, you’ll need to follow a specific series of steps to save your game:
- Press the ‘World’ button
- This will direct you to the main menu displaying the world map
- Press the ‘World’ button again
- Select ‘Save’ from the menu
- You can then create a new manual save file
When opt for the ‘Load’ option, you can choose between autosaves or your manual save files, allowing you to retry missions or explore alternate dialogue choices.
If you find that you haven’t saved your game manually for some time, don’t worry; the game typically autosaves whenever you interact with significant landmarks, collect items, engage in combat, or complete certain missions. This should help you avoid the frustration of losing substantial progress.
