Hideaki Anno is returning to the anime scene, but fans of Evangelion can breathe easy—it’s not another remake. Instead, he’s revisiting his artistic roots.
Neon Genesis Evangelion firmly established Hideaki Anno as a venerated figure in the realm of animation and filmmaking. This iconic series gave rise to an exceptional anime and a collection of celebrated films, crafting a franchise that enjoys immense popularity, even if its complexities can be daunting at times.
Since wrapping up the Rebuild of Evangelion series in 2021, Anno has shifted his focus to live-action films, creating hits like Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Shin Kamen Rider. However, his latest endeavor marks a return to animated projects that hold personal significance.
He is currently working on a remake of Space Battleship Yamato, a cinematic adaptation of the 1970s anime and manga. Anno has stated that encountering this series was pivotal, hinting that without it, Evangelion might not exist today.
“Had I not discovered Space Battleship Yamato 50 years ago, my life would be drastically different,” he declared, expressing his aspiration to allow newer generations to appreciate this classic in the same way he did.
“I wish to convey my gratitude and respect to everyone involved in Yamato and strive to create thought-provoking works that meld the past with the present, ensuring Space Battleship Yamato endures for the future,” he noted.
Production is being handled by Studio Khara, Anno’s company known for the Rebuild series, with a planned release date set for 2025. This new adaptation will run alongside the current Yamato remake, which is slated to hit Japanese theaters on November 22, 2024.
While it may be a bit disheartening that Anno has yet to embark on a wholly original project, the expansive universe of Yamato offers a wealth of creative opportunities. It will certainly be intriguing to witness his approach to storytelling outside the confines of Earth.
