The Pokemon games consistently feature RPG mechanics and a vast array of captivating Pocket Monsters, but they have occasionally lacked a compelling narrative.
Fortunately, it appears that fans are in agreement that Scarlet & Violet are successful in this aspect, enhancing the complexity of the games.
Despite the appreciation for the focus on the story, it also brings about a rollercoaster of emotions for the characters. As a result, fans are now questioning Game Freak’s decision to subject these young Trainers to such intense trauma.
The origin of this discussion can be traced back to a post on Reddit entitled, “Why are these kids so traumatized??”In this post, the author highlighted the distressing events that Kieran, Arven, Nemona, and even Penny had experienced, and praised Game Freak for their excellent character development in the game.
Just as a reminder, in the Teal Mask DLC, the author portrays Kieran as a “bitter, angry teenager fueled by hatred and anguish”while Arven is struggling to save his dog in a desperate attempt.
Penny’s character development is logical in this scenario, as they formed a group of antagonists to seek revenge against those who ostracized them. The author also brings up Nemona, implying that she lacks genuine companions due to her off-putting demeanor.
Some other players also added their own theories in the comments, sparking discussions about the reasons behind the children’s turmoil. The most popular comment suggests that this is simply the most likely result of giving powerful children weapons and forcing them to leave their homes at such a young age.
A different viewpoint suggests that the show accurately portrays the struggles of real school experiences. As one person stated, “Bullying and neglect can have a significant impact on a child’s development, and the school’s lack of effective policies for addressing these issues only adds to their difficulties.”
Another theory suggests that the younger developers at Game Freak, who may be more emotional or angsty, are gradually gaining more influence. One individual even joked that the millennial/younger developers are now taking charge of these games.
Some S&V players are taking advantage of the situation to praise the Ninth Generation, with one stating that it boasts the “most captivating and sophisticated storyline”among all Pokemon games. However, this statement is subject to discussion, as another player argued that “BW/B2W2 had the most sophisticated and intricate plot,”but admitted that “SV is a close contender.”
