Ex-Idol Charged with Forging Medical Documents to Evade Military Duty

On September 9, the Changwon District Prosecutor’s Office announced the indictment of A without detention on multiple charges, including violations of the Military Service Act, forgery of documents, and breaches of the Information and Communication Network Act.

The prosecution also indicted A’s mother, referred to as “B,”and a nurse, known as “C,”who assisted in falsifying the medical records.

According to the prosecution, in May 2021, A and B produced forged medical documents from a doctor to downgrade A’s military classification from Grade 1 (fit for active duty) to Grade 4 (reserved service).

Initially, the police, who conducted the first investigation, concluded there was inadequate evidence to support allegations that A and B deceived the Military Manpower Administration, leading to the case being closed in February without any charges.

However, following a review of computer log records, phone call recordings among the co-conspirators, and other corroborating evidence, the prosecution decided there was sufficient evidence to continue with the case.

In March, the prosecution requested a reinvestigation, and by May, A faced charges for violating the Military Service Act, while B received additional forgery allegations.

Further investigation, inclusive of two medical evaluations of the MRI submitted during A’s military examination, indicated that A did not have the condition cited as the basis for his military exemption.

C, the nurse responsible for accessing the hospital’s computer system to alter the records at B’s request, was also charged.

If convicted, A, who finished his service as a Grade 4 reservist, may be required to re-enlist as an active-duty soldier.

This case has sparked significant discussion in Korea, with netizens speculating on the identity of this former idol.
