Ex-Bungie Developer Explains Why “Dream” Feature for Destiny 2 Has Yet to Be Implemented

A former employee of Bungie has provided valuable insights regarding the absence of a player housing feature in Destiny 2, a component that many fans of online multiplayer games highly value. This aspect is notably prevalent in MMORPGs and similar online RPGs, where customization and personal space are key attractions.

For instance, Digital Extremes’ Warframe offers players the option to personalize their ships and living spaces extensively, allowing users to showcase achievements and upgrades to other players. In contrast, Destiny 2 only permits minimal customization through profile elements like Emblems and Titles.

The Discussion Rekindled

The topic resurfaced on January 13 via a post by Destiny 2 content creator Forcer on X/Twitter, prompting significant discussion within the community. Forcer questioned, “Real talk, how has Destiny not added player housing? This feels like a goldmine for playtime, player enjoyment & investment, and monetization?”

His remarks resonated with Destiny 2 streamer Aztecross, who echoed the sentiment, while Liana Ruppert, a former community manager and accessibility lead at Bungie, weighed in with her perspective on the matter.

Ruppert remarked, “Oh man, so many devs wanted this when I was there. It’d be so dope but phew would a lot of things need to change in the game and resource-wise internally to make that happen with the ROI at a level that would mark it as a beneficial inclusion. The dream.”

In a subsequent video commentary, Aztecross challenged the notion that every new feature must yield a direct financial return. He suggested that sometimes the value lies in player goodwill and retention rather than in quantifiable metrics. He asked, “I wonder if Final Fantasy XIV looked at their clan housing and thought to themselves ‘Should we give them 300 options for curtains? What’s the return on investment here?’”

Ruppert’s departure from Bungie in 2023 due to layoffs raises questions about the studio’s current stance on player housing. While the possibility remains uncertain, Bungie has yet to indicate any plans to introduce such a feature in Destiny 2, leaving fans eagerly awaiting updates.
