The official account of the Locarno International Film Festival published an interview with Kim Min-hee, who received the Pardo for Best Performance, on the 19th.
Kim Min-hee expressed, “To be honest, my expectations were not very high. However, I am incredibly grateful to have won this award for a film that I hold dear to my heart. This film is truly special to me and I believe this recognition is a testament to its beauty. As someone of my age, I often wondered if there would be anything as exhilarating and enjoyable as this. It feels as though all my energy was channeled directly into this character.”
She expressed, “I realized the depth of my love for the character and the immense happiness that the filming location brings me.”
Suyoocheon, the 32nd film directed by Hong Sang-soo, marks the 15th time that Kim Min-hee has worked with him. The movie revolves around a scandal that takes place at a women’s university during a drama sketch festival. The ensemble cast includes Kim Min-hee, Kwon Hae-hyo, Jo Yoon-hee, and Ha Seong-guk.
The plot centers on a university professor who enlists her long-term unemployed uncle to direct a play. The movie is set to debut in theaters nationwide on September 18th.
Kim Min-hee expressed her thoughts on Suyoocheon, stating that as a viewer of the film, she found it to be incredibly beautiful and moving. She struggled to put it into words, but she was deeply touched by its mysterious and captivating nature. She also emphasized the importance of the intricate and diverse dynamics present in human relationships, believing them to be essential elements in the film.
In addition, she expressed, “The continuous filming of the changing moon in the sky, along with the striking contrast between events on the ground and in the sky, made for a truly beautiful experience. The heartfelt reactions from the audience were truly heartwarming. The blessings and comments such as ‘The film is stunning,’ ‘It was fantastic,’ and ‘Thank you’ from the audience after the film concluded brought me great joy. I am determined to continue presenting exceptional films to the audience.”
At the closing ceremony of the Locarno Film Festival, Kim Min-hee was awarded the Best Acting Award for her performance in Suyoocheon. Her embrace with director Hong Sang-soo, with whom she has been romantically involved, sparked speculation. In 2016, Hong filed for divorce from his wife, but the Seoul Family Court denied the claim in 2019, stating that Hong was at fault for the dissolution of the marriage.
