On September 12th, Moon was interrogated at the Bangbae Police Station in Seoul before being transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. Reports indicate that the prosecution has yet to issue a summons for Moon.
Our investigation has uncovered that Moon faced indictment in June on allegations of sexually assaulting a woman who was under the influence, alongside two accomplices. He was called for questioning on August 28th, approximately two months post-indictment, and it has been noted that his co-accused are not public figures.
The charge of special rape applies when two or more individuals, or those armed, engage in non-consensual sexual acts with someone incapacitated or unable to resist. If convicted, the punishment ranges from a minimum of seven years to life imprisonment, as outlined in Article 4, Paragraph 1 of the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
Following Moon’s questioning, SM Entertainment issued a statement confirming the serious nature of the allegations, declaring, “We have acknowledged that Taeil is facing charges related to sexual assault. Understanding the seriousness of this issue, we have decided, after discussions with Taeil, that he will leave the group and halt his activities.”
Fans have voiced their discontent, stating, “If the situation warrants such drastic measures, the agency should disclose more details,” yet SM Entertainment has not offered additional information.
Some fans are calling for harsh repercussions, expressing, “Given that there is a definite victim in this case, we advocate for severe penalties,” and have criticized Taeil with remarks like, “Is it really that difficult to refrain from crime?” Others have taken to social media, posting videos of themselves cutting up Taeil’s photo cards in protest.
Taeil debuted in April 2016 as part of SM Entertainment’s boy group ‘NCT’ through the sub-unit ‘NCT U.’ He achieved notable fame in Japan and China, later becoming part of another sub-unit, NCT 127.
Earlier in August, Taeil took part in NCT 127’s fan meeting celebrating the group’s eighth anniversary at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, and also contributed to the recently launched full-length album, which indicated a return to his activities.
Regarding the allegations against Taeil for special rape, an SM representative remarked, “As this case is currently under investigation, we find it challenging to provide further commentary.”
