Lay joined SM Entertainment’s group EXO-M in 2012 and was a member until his departure. During his time in the group, he was active in multiple countries, including his home country of Korea.

In 2015, Zhang Yixing established his own studio and began to miss domestic schedules. Starting in 2017, he no longer took part in regular album activities but continued to participate in select events.

In 2021, he rejoined EXO for their special album ‘DON’T FIGHT THE FEELING’ after a gap of approximately two years and seven months. However, the following year, he departed from the group as his exclusive contract with the agency had come to an end.

Despite facing criticism for violating their contracts during their activities, EXO’s Chinese members Tao, Kris, and Luhan still seem to maintain their friendship with the group. While Lay has not been actively involved in the group’s activities in Korea, he continues to maintain a strong bond with his fellow members.

On April 14th, he resumed his activities in Korea by partnering with n.CH Entertainment and releasing ‘STEP.’
