Amid the success of EXO’s comeback, its leader Suho has been receiving mixed reactions for allegedly making his musical “MOZART!”a “box-office failure.”
Music Officials Claim Musical ‘MOZART!’ Starring EXO Suho is ‘Box-Office Bomb’
According to the evaluation of music officials, the musical, “MOZART!”, starring EXO Suho, is a “box-office bomb.”
In an article released by Ten Asia, it claimed that the musical has virtually failed to hit the box office, citing the fact that nearly half of the seats are vacant not only on weekdays but also on weekends, despite the popular idol’s appearance.
In the case of Suho’s performance, his nearest casting date on July 19 at 2:30 p.m. KST still has about 300 out of the 1,030 seats on the first floor that are empty, as of the 14th.
Some of the tickets sold were estimated to be reserved by the agency, in other words, the actual number of paid tickets would have been smaller. The second floor is also virtually empty due to a huge number of empty seats.
Although it is hard to say that tickets were not sold exceptionally because it was a weekday daytime performance, Suho’s fastest weekend performance, Saturday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m., is available for nearly half of the first floor at the same time.
Industry watchers say that the prime-time Saturday evening performance sold this much with about two weeks left before the performance is more than a “box office failure.”
Korean Media Explains Why EXO Suho Is ‘Responsible’ for ‘Mozart’s’ Failure
The K-media outlet then pointed out the factors of the virtual failure, including the fact that the performance was held at the Grand Theater Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, which is highly complained of sound problems.
There are also musical fans who expressed that there is no need to watch the performance again as it has been performed steadily.
But most of all, musical fans complained about EXO Suho’s singing and acting skills, blaming him that if top-class musical actors such as Hong Kwang Ho did it, the same result would have been achieved.
Spectators left a review on the Interpark’s page and criticized the idol.
- “The main actor is really bad at singing. I’ve seen idol musicals a few times, and they’re the worst. Isn’t that a nuisance?”
- “It’s such a waste of 170,000 won (134 USD) for VIP seats.”
Suho was initially criticized for his skills during their press call in June where he first showed his vocalization, breathing, and acting.
Ten Asia added:
“…It’s hard to say that he’s a proper lead actor… In some high-pitched tones, the sound was flat (b). All of them are difficult to improve in a short period of time.”
An official from the musical industry said:
“They paid a high casting fee to bring idols, but if the box office fails like this, EMK Musical Company, the production company, would have suffered considerable losses.”
