Experience Dining in a Vintage Airplane at the World’s Most Unique McDonald’s

Hidden in a quaint town in New Zealand, McDonald’s enthusiasts can discover a unique treasure: an old abandoned airplane that has been transformed into one of the chain’s restaurants.

Over the years, we’ve encountered some truly unusual McDonald’s locations. One of the strangest might be the “creepy” UFO-shaped McDonald’s in New Mexico, nestled in a town notorious for alien sightings.

Other sites are simply lavish, like the viral McMansion McDonald’s, complete with elegant light fixtures, plush seating, a glass conservatory, and a grand staircase.

Some locations offer diners a nostalgic trip back to the 1950s, featuring a jukebox and vintage memorabilia.

However, the McDonald’s location that has gained the title of the “coolest” features a decommissioned Douglas DC-3 aircraft from the Second World War era, also referred to as Dakotas. This iconic plane was originally built in 1943 and was later used as a passenger plane in Australia during the 1960s, according to the owners.

While customers can’t order food inside the aircraft, they can grab their meals at the adjacent McDonald’s restaurant and enjoy their food inside the plane, which accommodates up to 20 diners at a time.

The aircraft is a striking sight, adorned with the McDonald’s logo on its exterior. This remarkable location has been welcoming customers for over thirty years, having been acquired by the franchise in 1990.

You can grab your takeout and savor your meal in an extraordinarily unique setting.

The proud owners of the location, Eileen and Des, shared: “We’ve received a lot of publicity from around the world, and our locals take great pride in it. It has become a landmark here in New Zealand.”

This McDonald’s is undeniably popular among Tripadvisor users, who describe it as the “coolest” McDonald’s they have ever visited.

“It’s so unique and special. I think everyone should visit at least once, even just to see it from the outside when traveling through Taupo,” remarked one visitor.

“Where else can you enjoy your McDonald’s meal inside an airplane? The novelty alone is impressive, but the initial astonishment of spotting a large DC-3 plane on top of a McDonald’s restaurant is just plane (pun intended) awesome!” commented another satisfied customer.
