Expert Insights on the Risks
However, this quick-fix method raises concerns among automotive specialists. Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, provides important advice. He states, “Using warm water—rather than boiling water—inside a sandwich bag and gently dragging it across the window is relatively safe. However, using extremely hot water can lead to issues.”
According to Conway, the swift temperature changes can pose a risk of cracking the glass. He also highlights the potential dangers posed by the bag type used. “A standard sandwich bag is soft and pliable, reducing the risk of scratches, while thicker bags with sharp edges may cause serious damage to your windshield,” he warns.

Recommended Alternatives for De-Icing
For those looking for safer alternatives, Conway recommends starting with a traditional spray-on de-icer. He also suggests a mixture of three parts vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. “Vinegar acts as a natural antifreeze, effectively breaking down ice on your windshield with just a quick spray,” he elaborates.
Furthermore, he cautions against the common habit of idling your car to warm up the interior. “Though it may seem harmless, relying too heavily on this method can shorten your engine’s lifespan if done frequently,” Conway explains.
This TikTok trend is just one of many recent online crazes that have drawn the attention of experts. Previously, psychologists have also issued warnings regarding viral winter challenges that may pose safety risks.
