Explained: Netflix’s “Outside” – A Thrilling New Horror Movie Overview

Discover the latest horror film to hit Netflix, which brings an innovative twist to the zombie genre: Outside. Here’s a glimpse of what you can anticipate.

George Romero, known as the pioneer of the zombie film movement, transformed the horror landscape with his groundbreaking work Night of the Living Dead in 1968. He followed it with a series of films that took the concept of the undead in uncharted and intriguing directions.

While Romero’s zombies were classically slow, filmmakers like Zack Snyder in his remake of Dawn of the Dead, along with Danny Boyle in 28 Days Later and its sequel, introduced us to faster, more aggressive iterations.

In contrast, Outside, the Netflix release, introduces a novel type of zombie that has its origins in the Philippines.

What is the premise of the Netflix horror film Outside?

The plot of Outside centers around a family trying to escape a terrifying zombie pandemic by retreating to a remote farmhouse in the countryside. However, they soon realize that their sanctuary offers no real safety.

What sets Outside apart from typical zombie flicks is the unsettling fact that these undead beings possess the ability to speak and retain fragments of their humanity.

During a screening in Manila, writer-director Carlo Ledesma was quoted by GMA News, sharing that “There have been films where we see zombies talk, but I aimed to create depth for the backstories of my zombies. Their last memories before being bitten become their final words.”

“I didn’t want to portray them solely as mindless killers. I aimed for all characters in this film to maintain their emotions and ability to process feelings.”

Initial feedback regarding this fresh take—and the film as a whole—has been largely positive. One viewer commented, “The film kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s intense and brutal.”

Reflecting on the emotional depth, another audience member expressed, “I was literally brought to tears. I wholeheartedly recommend the film.”

A third viewer lauded Outside as “a remarkable drama” and labeled it “a new zombie genre in its own right.”
