Explaining the Identity of the Hell Devil in Chainsaw Man

The Devils in Chainsaw Man present a truly distinctive aspect within the realms of animanga. The creative genius behind it all, Tatsuki Fujimoto, has introduced a myriad of intriguing Devils, with the Hell Devil being particularly notable.

True to its name, the Hell Devil represents the dread associated with Hell. This formidable creature takes on a centaur-like form, characterized by a blank face save for a gaping mouth. Its bizarre figure is shrouded in flames, and its skin appears unnaturally stretched over its body.

While details about this Devil remain scarce due to its brief appearances, let’s delve deeper into the essence of this entity born from the fear of the infernal.

Role and Appearances of the Hell Devil in Chainsaw Man

To date, the Hell Devil has shown up in the series on two occasions. Its inaugural appearance occurs during the International Assassins Arc, where Santa Claus harnessed the Hell Devil’s powers, sacrificing one of her perfect dolls along with three children to transport all present to Hell. In this sequence, it manifested as a gigantic hand boasting six fingers descending from the heavens.

The Hell Devil made a second appearance in the Control Devil Arc, summoned by Kishibe’s Anti-Makima Squad after six members fell victim to throat slashing. They invoked the Hell Devil to eliminate Makima and send her to Hell. However, its moment of prominence was fleeting, as the fully transformed Chainsaw Man quickly dispatched it before it could truly shine. The Hell Devil would see a revival shortly thereafter.

Within the narrative of Chainsaw Man, while the Hell Devil isn’t classified as a Primal Devil, it still possesses considerable strength. It derives its power from the societal fear of Hell, a learned concept among humans rather than an inherent one. Its capacity to effortlessly deliver beings to Hell solidifies its terrifying nature. The Hell Devil’s appearance and capabilities enhance the atmospheric horror and the threats characters encounter, intricately weaving into the overarching themes of fear and survival in a world plagued by Devils.

As noted earlier, there is a limited understanding of the Hell Devil, with its appearances and references notable but not exhaustive. In terms of abilities, it exhibits several classic Devil traits, such as forming contracts with humans for specific ‘prices’ and rejuvenating itself by consuming blood.

Currently, the Hell Devil appears to have formed a contract with Santa Claus (gaining the ability to transport all living beings within a certain area to Hell in exchange for three children and one of her bodies) and with the Anti-Makima Squad (offering physical manifestation in return for their lives).

Ultimately, as a representation of the fear linked to Hell, the Hell Devil can exhibit itself in the form of a colossal six-fingered hand. This manifestation seemingly originates from a door in the sky, creating a direct connection to Hell, along with multiple entry points to that dreadful realm. Hence, this doorway facilitates its capacity to dispatch entities to Hell.
