The meme “Fiona, is that a ghost behind you?”is rapidly gaining popularity on TikTok, coinciding perfectly with the Halloween season. This phrase first emerged during a TikTok Live broadcast on October 16, 2024, hosted by medium James Bucknell, who is also recognized as midnightjamesbucknell.
In this live session, Bucknell mistakenly thought he saw a ghostly figure lurking behind a woman named Fiona, when in fact, it was just her daughter quietly observing in a well-lit area.
Bucknell, under the impression that Fiona was haunted, inquired, “Fiona, is that a ghost behind you?” To which Fiona’s daughter charmingly replied, “That’s a bit rude,” causing an uproar of laughter among viewers.
@just._.nobody7 “Fiona is that a ghost behind YOU💜” “thats a bit rood” I’m a bit late to this but whenever I see this it just makes me laugh 😭😭 #💜 #fionaaghostbehindYOU💜 #fionaisthataghostbehindyou #thatsabitrood #hilarious #fyp #foryoupage
Though the original TikTok Live was removed shortly after it aired, it was re-uploaded to Bucknell’s official YouTube channel, where it initially struggled to gain traction. Yet, as it spread across TikTok through user reposts, it ignited a wave of remixes and parodies.

As Halloween approaches, users have been elevating the meme further. Notably, on October 26, TikTok user girldestroyer96 reenacted the incident with a friend dressed in a Halloween costume, racking up over 569,000 views.
Many have likened this trend to the amusing “Mama, there’s a girl behind you” phenomenon, where users not only echoed the original video but also integrated its audio into skits.

The “Fiona, is that a ghost behind you?”meme has even infiltrated TikTok’s copypasta culture, with users pairing the phrase with a purple heart emoji, reminiscent of trending memes like “Donatella VERSACE”and “What I Do.”
This trend, filled with a mix of humor and absurdity, shows no signs of slowing down, as entertaining and frantic videos utilizing the sound are attracting millions of views on the platform.
October has seen this meme sweep over TikTok, adding to the month’s viral phenomena, including the popular Minecraft college football trend.
