The second part of the Chainsaw Man manga, also known as the Academy Saga, introduces fans to Asa Mitaka as the main protagonist. The initial chapters of this part solely revolve around her, giving readers a chance to become familiar with her character and her involvement in the series as the host of War Devil Yoru.
This development occurs in Chainsaw Man chapter 98, where Asa Mitaka appears to die but is ultimately resurrected through a pact with the War Devil. However, fans are now wondering about the origin of Asa’s scar, which mysteriously appears on her face at the end of chapter 98 despite her revival.
Asa’s Scar in Chainsaw Man Is Not Technically Hers
In Chainsaw Man, Asa received her scar after being killed by her classmate and then revived by the War Devil. The scar is now visible when Yoru takes over Asa’s body. Therefore, it can be argued that the scar belongs to Yoru since it only appears when she is in control. However, as it is still Asa’s body, it is also accurate to refer to it as Asa’s scar.
Although this may provide an explanation for how Asa obtained her scar, it does not address the reason for Fujimoto’s decision to only depict Yoru with the scar and not both Yoru and Asa. It can be assumed that this choice was made in order to easily differentiate between the two characters, as they share the same body and can only have limited physical distinctions.
For instance, the sole notable distinction in appearance between the two characters when they transform into Chainsaw Man is a shift in their eyes. As Yoru, their eyes take on a ring-like shape similar to those of the Famine Devil Fami and the Control Devils Nayuta and Makima. Nevertheless, from a distance, it would be challenging to discern or confirm such a feature, whereas a scar running across their entire face would be much more noticeable.
Why the scar disappearing makes sense in-series, explained
The reason for the scar appearing on Yoru and disappearing on Asa in the series can be explained. While it has not been directly stated whether Asa is a Fiend or Hybrid, it is widely believed by fans that she is a Fiend with Hybrid characteristics and powers. This is likely due to the fact that Asa was not completely dead when Yoru possessed her body, and also because of Yoru’s formidable strength and position as the War Devil.
Similarly, the reappearance of the scar when Yoru assumes control of their body reflects the Fiend’s method of revival. Due to Asa’s body being mostly lifeless prior to Yoru’s possession, the scar would inevitably resurface after Yoru’s healing and takeover. Quanxi’s collection of Fiends also serves as a prime illustration of how injuries cannot be completely reversed once a Devil reanimates a corpse and transforms into a Fiend.
Despite only appearing when Yoru transforms, this scar is a result of their informal Hybrid style contract. This means that, unlike a regular Fiend, Yoru is not always in control of their body, and the scar may not always be visible. However, since Yoru has taken over Asa’s body in a manner similar to a Fiend, it further highlights the context of their origins. This change in appearance reflects the characteristics of a Hybrid, blurring the lines between Yoru and Asa’s unique situation.
