On the morning of October 25, Kim Soo-mi was rushed to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in Seocho-gu, where she was pronounced dead at the age of 75 after experiencing cardiac arrest.
This devastating news comes just months after she halted her public engagements in May, following a medical recommendation for rest due to exhaustion, making her passing all the more unexpected.
The beloved actress had a vibrant career, appearing in numerous dramas and entertainment shows, with her last role being in tvN STORY’s “The Village Presidents People.” In a special episode from last August, she candidly shared her surprising final aspirations.
In that episode, while portraying a recruit, Kim Soo-mi expressed her appreciation for being called to serve her country at her age. She humorously remarked, “I don’t know if I’ll pass away in 2-3 years, but please ensure my ashes are interred at the national cemetery.”
Lim Ho responded with curiosity, “Why are you discussing your will?” leading to Kim Kwang-kyu being momentarily speechless. Undeterred, Kim Soo-mi began singing, “I’ll meet you on the other side of the Jordan River.”
Six years earlier, on SBS’s “Master in the House,” she requested an extraordinary portrait for her memorial. “I want a photo that’s unlike anything you would find at a funeral home; it should capture joy, with no tears, just dancing,” she explained, wishing for her farewell to center around reminiscence rather than sorrow.
Throughout her life, Kim Soo-mi displayed a delightful array of outfits, from a classic white dress to a vibrant pink attire. She stated, “Although facing death in my 70s isn’t easy, we must accept it,” encouraging others to “release the idea of a somber memorial photo.”
According to police investigations, her demise was attributed to diabetic shock. Her son, Jeong Myung-ho, who leads Napalflower F&B, disclosed to Yonhap News that her blood sugar levels had surged past 500 and noted that she was under considerable stress due to an ongoing lawsuit regarding unpaid appearance fees.
Kim Soo-mi’s funeral is currently taking place in Room 6 at Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu. The service is planned for 11 AM on October 27, followed by her burial at Seoul Memorial Park.
