Despite her frailty and illness, Koyuki’s kind and gentle nature shone through, making her a pivotal character in the story of Demon Slayer. She was intricately tied to the tragic backstory of Akaza, also known as Hakuji, who was taken in by her father Keizo as her caretaker. Eventually, Koyuki and Hakuji became engaged, a testament to the enduring love that blossomed between them.

Despite being the beloved daughter of Keizo, Koyuki’s life was tragically impacted by a chronic illness that confined her to her bed for most of her youth. Witnessing her child’s suffering, Koyuki’s mother was overwhelmed with despair and took her own life, leaving Koyuki solely under the care of her father.

Despite facing difficulties, Koyuki maintained a kind and composed demeanor. She was sincerely grateful to those who took care of her, especially Hakuji, who would eventually become her fiancée. Koyuki’s father, Keizo, had limited resources and worked various odd jobs in order to provide for his daughter.

During a chance encounter, he came across Hakuji, a young man who had been banished from Edo and was branded as a criminal. Despite getting into a fight, Keizo brought the defeated Hakuji to his house and introduced him to Koyuki as her new guardian. Over time, their relationship blossomed in secrecy, and Hakuji’s presence brought a positive change to Koyuki’s previously somber and unhealthy existence.

Hakuji was devoted to his responsibility and showed great care for Koyuki. He frequently provided comfort during challenging moments, assuring her that they would one day have the opportunity to share simple joys, such as watching fireworks together.

Although seemingly mundane, these conversations held great emotional importance for Koyuki, as they served as a reminder of the possibility of one day escaping her sickbed and experiencing life beyond it.

Despite her weakness, Koyuki remained resilient. However, she encountered further obstacles when the heir of the neighboring dojo started to harbor feelings for her. This individual, who displayed both conceit and aggression, was unable to comprehend her situation.

During one of their confrontations, he heartlessly made her go outside while she was feeling unwell, causing a severe asthma attack. Frightened by her state, he deserted her, leaving her to endure the suffering on her own. Hakuji stumbled upon her in distress and offered the necessary assistance that potentially saved her life, strengthening their connection even more.

Amazingly, Koyuki’s condition started to get better, giving her the opportunity to fully enjoy life. While watching a fireworks show in their town, she fondly recalled the moment when Hakuji had promised to take her to see fireworks when she was ill.

Despite Hakuji’s forgetfulness, Koyuki had held onto their promise as a symbol of the future she had envisioned. Moved by the fact that someone had faith in her recovery, Koyuki proposed to Hakuji to be her husband, to which he happily agreed.

Despite their engagement, the heir of the dojo harbored a deep anger towards Hakuji and held a personal grudge against him. In an attempt to defeat Hakuji, the heir resorted to treachery by poisoning the water well at Keizo’s dojo. Tragically, both Koyuki and her father unknowingly drank the poisoned water on the same day and passed away. This occurred just as Koyuki was starting to embrace a healthy and fulfilling life as a young woman, at the young age of 16.

The loss of Koyuki and her father proved to be too much for Hakuji, causing him to spiral out of control. In a fit of rage, he unleashed a wave of destruction, killing all of the inhabitants of the nearby dojo. This caught the attention of Kibutsuji Muzan, who transformed Hakuji into a demon known today as Akaza.

Many years had passed since the fierce battle between Akaza and the Demon Slayers Giyu Tomioka and Tanjiro Kamado. During the intense confrontation, Koyuki’s spirit returned as a voice of reason. Despite Akaza’s initial inability to recognize her, she continuously begged him to cease fighting and reminded him of the humanity he had forsaken. Her presence reignited deep-seated memories within Akaza, prompting him to reflect on his past life as Hakuji and the love he shared with Koyuki.

As Akaza’s human memories returned, he came to the realization that his ultimate wish was to pass away and be reunited with his dear ones. Despite his attempts to end his own life, he was unable to do so due to Muzan’s grasp on him.
