Agatha All Along has just introduced a reference to one of the most sinister characters in Marvel Comics, Mephisto. So, who exactly is Mephisto and what significance does he hold in the series?
The new Marvel series, Agatha All Along, has taken viewers on an exciting journey as it delves into the world of witches and one of the most intricate villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In Episodes 1 and 2, we meet characters like Joe Locke’s Teen and Aubrey Plaza’s enigmatic character, but Episode 3 unveils a shocking revelation by mentioning Mephisto, who is recognized as one of the most formidable demons in the Marvel Comics universe.
This raises the question: Who is Mephisto, and how will he influence the remaining six episodes of Agatha All Along? Here’s what we know.
Who is Mephisto in Marvel’s Lore?
Mephisto is often viewed as Marvel’s version of the devil, ruling over a pocket dimension known as Hell.
First appearing in 1968’s Silver Surfer #3, Mephisto evolved from a minor antagonist to a major threat, engaging in battles against iconic characters like Thor, the Avengers, and Daredevil.
One of the most significant relationships in the Marvel comic lore involving Mephisto is with Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch.
Mephisto played a crucial role in the creation of Wanda’s twin sons, Billy and Tommy. Using her magic, Wanda inadvertently summoned Mephisto’s essence, which was a key factor in bringing the twins to life.
Unbeknownst to her, Mephisto had been lying in wait, eventually absorbing both Billy and Tommy back into himself to amplify his power, as the twins were imbued with traces of Wanda’s potent chaos magic.
This revelation ultimately drove Wanda into turmoil, as she grappled with the knowledge that her twins were both the product of and victims of the devil’s manipulations.
In time, the twins were reincarnated as Speedster and Wiccan, yet their connection to Mephisto continued to haunt their storylines in the comics.
Due to their background, many fans anticipated a Mephisto cameo during WandaVision, especially since the twins played a pivotal role in the latter half of the series.
Yet, those theories fizzled out… but now it seems Agatha All Along is poised to bring the devil into the spotlight for real this time.
Could Mephisto Be the Twist Villain in Agatha All Along?
In Episode 3, Jennifer Kale hints to Teen that Agatha’s long-lost son might be an agent of Mephisto, suggesting that the devil could very well be the twist villain in Agatha All Along.
Currently, little is known about Agatha’s mysterious son, Nicholas Scratch, aside from his absence.
As Teen is under a spell that prevents him from revealing his true identity, there’s a possibility he could be Nicholas in disguise.
When Jennifer mentions the potential of Agatha’s son collaborating with Mephisto, Teen appears somewhat startled. This reaction could imply shock over Agatha’s child associating with the devil, or it could indicate that he himself is Nicholas and has a deal with Mephisto.
Though this detail is merely a hint for now, it’s certain that the show will revisit this theory, marking the first time any MCU project has named Mephisto directly.
Whether Teen turns out to be Nicholas in cahoots with the devil or if Mephisto is concealing another character within Agatha’s coven, fans have six episodes left to uncover the truth.
Airing now on Disney Plus, Episodes 1-3 of Agatha All Along are available to stream. Don’t forget to also check out the lineup of upcoming MCU movies and shows.
