Exploring Nudity in “Queen Woo”: A Focus on the Breasts

During the press conference on August 27th, concerns regarding the portrayal of nudity in the series were highlighted. The actress defended the creative choice, stating, “It was for the impact of the character.”

While noise can serve as a marketing tool, capturing audience attention, it ultimately fades away. In the end, many viewers primarily recall the explicit content.

The series features an overwhelming amount of skin exposure, creating a somewhat uncomfortable viewing experience. Jeong Yu-mi, portraying Woo Sun, the older sister of Queen Woo, becomes the central character affected by this trend. Woo Sun has harbored dreams of ascending to the throne.

Despite her aspirations, her younger sister Woo Hee (played by Jeon Jong-seo) marries King Go Nam-mu (played by Ji Chang-wook), leaving Woo Sun feeling inadequate.

Seizing a chance to change her circumstances, Woo Sun believes that without heirs to inherit the throne, if she bears a child with the king, she could alter her fate and claim the title of queen.

Under the influence of a potion, Woo Sun mistakenly thinks she has fallen in love with Go Nam-mu and has an intimate encounter with the shaman Sa Bi (played by Oh Ha-nee).

Nudity is also present in a scene where King Go Nam-mu returns victorious from war and is tended to for his wounds. Three maidservants, dressed minimally, wipe his body using ice in their mouths, with the camera drawing attention to the maids’ physiques.

The drama does not shy away from depicting explicit sexual content. Following King Go Nam-mu’s death, Woo Hee opts to marry his brother, a practice known as levirate marriage, to reclaim the position of queen.

Third prince Go Bal-gi (played by Lee Soo-hyuk) unveils his repressed ambitions. When informed that he cannot claim the queen while married, he has intimate relations with his wife before fatally stabbing her.

These sexual encounters heighten his ambitions, a recurring theme shared by both Go Bal-gi and Woo Sun. However, the frequent appearance of such scenes can disrupt the storyline and hinder viewer engagement.
