Exploring the Foil of Wignall and Ellenor’s Backstory in Wistoria: Wand and Sword Against Will and Elfaria’s Relationship

Wignall and Ellenor, both members of the elven race, have a backstory in Wistoria: Wand and Sword that acts as a compelling foil to the relationship between Will Serfort and Elfaria.

The narrative unveils the painful facets of the elf’s past, which bears similarities to Will Serfort’s journey. Just as Will faces ridicule for his lack of magic, Wignall is scorned by his elven kin for his inability to perform powerful illusions.

Moreover, the relationship dynamics between Wignall and Ellenor serve as a striking counterpoint to those of Will and Elfaria. Unlike Ellenor, who ultimately rejects Wignall, Elfaria expresses a desire to support Will, especially in his pursuit of dreams.

Analyzing Wignall and Ellenor’s backstory in Wistoria: Wand and Sword and its reflection of Will and Elfaria’s bond

Episode 9 of Wistoria: Wand and Sword presents Wignall Lindor, the elven mage, in a revealing light. After descending into the depths of a dungeon with Will, Wignall recalls a haunting nightmare from his past, where he faced rejection from fellow elves, including Ellenor. A significant moment from his childhood involved the Elven queen, who cut off Wignall’s left hand as he reached out to her.

But what exactly defines the relationship between Wignall and Ellenor, and how does it relate to Will Serfort and Elfaria’s connection? According to the Wistoria: Wand and Sword manga, Wignall and Ellenor were once foster siblings. Growing up together, Wignall felt a brotherly urge to protect Ellenor.

Despite his devotion, Ellenor was gifted with exceptional magical abilities that distinguished her as one of the High Elves. Able to effortlessly create the Kingswood—an extraordinary elven feat—she caught the attention of the High Elves, who eventually took her away, allowing her to become a Magia Vander.

Wignall dedicated himself to improving his magical abilities to match Ellenor’s, but he struggled to do so. Unlike the other elves, Wignall’s illusions lacked physical form, leading his peers to demean him as a disgrace to their kind.

Ultimately, Wignall found himself shunned by both the other elves and Ellenor, who severed his arm with magic and branded him as a disgrace before abandoning him. This rejection left Wignall with a feeling of failure. Although he ranks as one of the top three students at Rigarden Academy, he harbors deep insecurities about his worth.

Wignall’s backstory shares significant parallels with Will Serfort and Elfaria’s past. Will and Elfaria also grew up in an orphanage, developing a special bond over the years. Like Ellenor, Elfaria is portrayed as a talented mage who excels in magic.

She created El Glace Frosse, a powerful series of twelve ice spells, to become the youngest Magia Vander. In contrast, Will Serfort faced continuous mockery for his lack of magical powers, enduring mistreatment from classmates at Rigarden Academy.

Despite the harsh treatment, Will persevered, using the criticism as motivation to strive for self-improvement and to get closer to Elfaria. Both Will and Wignall share the same fate and aspirations: to ascend the tower and reunite with the people they care for deeply.

However, a pivotal distinction lies between the two pairs. Elfaria Albis Serfort never looked down on Will, offering her unwavering support even when others labeled him as a “No-talent.”Acknowledging Will’s unyielding spirit, she stood by him through thick and thin.

Ellenor’s harsh treatment of Wignall underscores a darker side of their bond. Although chapter 41 of the Wistoria: Wand and Sword manga reveals that the elven queen eventually recognizes Wignall as one of her own, it does not excuse her past actions. The troubled dynamic between Ellenor and Wignall serves as a poignant foil to the bond shared by Will and Elfaria.
