With the upcoming debut of Deadpool & Wolverine, the focus is on one of the most crucial elements of any superhero movie: the awesome costumes that will be featured.
The writing is certainly crucial, as the action set pieces in the MCU are so massive that artists begin working on them before filming even begins. However, if the costume appears foolish, fans will rapidly lose interest.
So far, Deadpool has successfully avoided this issue by precisely adapting his comic book attire. However, Deadpool & Wolverine will signify a significant change for the main character, Wolverine. After appearing in multiple films that appeared hesitant to fully embrace their identity as superhero movies, he will finally receive a proper superhero suit.
As we anticipate the release of what could potentially be the greatest MCU film yet, let’s take a moment to analyze the significance of the attire worn by the notoriously vulgar pair.
Deadpool’s Suit in the New Movie
Although the origins of Deadpool’s new suit are different, the overall design remains the same. At the beginning of the movie, we see Deadpool in retirement, but he eventually receives a new suit from the TVA. While the red may appear slightly brighter than in previous films, the overall design is unchanged.
Deadpool’s costume appears to be unchanged from his 2016 film debut.
The updated suit has undergone some changes, as reported. The katanas have been upgraded to adamantium blades, and the sword hilts no longer bear the engraving BEA ARTHUR, instead featuring DR BS as a tribute to all four leading ladies of The Golden Girls, including Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, rather than just Bea herself.
It’s still thrilling, although not quite on the same level of excitement as when fans discovered that Deadpool would be faithfully portrayed in the first 2016 movie. However, this time around, fans are even more eager to see another hero’s outfit.
Wolverine dreams come true
While Wolverine has been featured in films for over 20 years, fans are most excited about the character’s iconic costume. Finally, in this iteration, Wolverine will be seen wearing his traditional yellow-and-blue suit for the first time.
Despite the original X-Men films’ fear that fans would not take the budding franchise seriously if the characters wore neon yellow costumes, it took a long time to get to the point where they finally donned black leather outfits for most of the franchise’s run time.
After 20 years of black leather, Wolverine will finally get a more comic book-accurate costume.
Wolverine’s costume has always been easily recognizable, making it just as exciting as any other hero’s. Though he has occasionally opted for more natural colors or casual attire, the original 1970s suit remains popular and continues to resurface in various iterations.
Logan was absent when the first accurate X-Men costumes appeared in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, incorporating a splash of yellow into their ensembles. The upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film will be the initial endeavor at featuring Wolverine donning an authentic comic book outfit, and it is hoped that it will include one crucial element.
Now we just need the mask
The mask is the one thing that Wolverine has been longing for in live-action adaptations. It is a significant element of Wolverine’s attire that has evolved over time.
Originally, the mask of Wolverine resembled more of a cute kitten rather than a ferocious creature. However, it was later modified to the more recognizable version after artist Gil Kane unintentionally drew it incorrectly on the cover of Giant-Size X-Men #1.
Wolverine’s original mask is most notable for it’s adorable whiskers.
The reason is unclear, but Kane accidentally placed the mask too close to Batman’s cowl instead of the cat ears and whiskers that Wolverine was known for. The book’s interior artist, Dave Cockrum, was fond of the updated mask and made changes to the completed pages to match the cover.
As of now, the live-action Wolverine mask has not been revealed in all its glory. However, based on early word of mouth and merchandise, we can confirm that it will make an appearance in the film.
Wolverine’s iconic mask has come close to appearing on screen in the past, including a deleted scene from 2013’s The Wolverine and references in the comic books featured in 2017’s Logan. However, its long-awaited debut in Deadpool & Wolverine will finally fulfill the promise made to fans of seeing Wolverine in his full costume.
Comic Book Inspirations
Although there are some discrepancies, the release of Deadpool & Wolverine signals a thrilling shift in the MCU. It cannot be argued that these are the most faithful interpretations of the comics that the MCU has ever embraced.
The MCU went above and beyond with its designs but rarely strived for accuracy.
Despite the success of the MCU suits, they rarely adhere strictly to the designs in the comics. When they do, it is often for comedic effect, such as with Captain America’s USO Tour outfit from World War II. However, there are speculations that we may see more faithful adaptations of comic book looks in future films.
Despite the abundance of comic references for Deadpool & Wolverine, sneak peeks have already shown us both Wolverine in his iconic brown costume (which he began wearing in the 1970s due to artist John Byrne’s dislike of his original blue-and-yellow color scheme) and Wolverine disguised as Patch, the one-eyed owner of a popular club in Madripoor. These are just a few of the many enjoyable nods that have been revealed.
What are others wearing?
Unfortunately for fans, the main focus of Deadpool & Wolverine’s numerous cameos does not appear to be staying true to the comics. Instead, it serves as a tribute to the no longer existing FOX universe of X-Men movies.
Evidently, we have witnessed the likes of Lady Deadpool and Cowboy Deadpool, both donning variations of Deadpool’s film attire. This should come as no shock, given the striking similarity between Deadpool’s movie outfit and his original comic appearance.
The appearances of the other characters we have witnessed pay homage to their looks in the films. We have observed Tyler Mane’s depiction of Sabretooth, while stills suggest the inclusion of Juggernaut from X-Men: The Last Stand and a possible iteration of Blade.
Although they are not traditional comic book costumes, they hold great significance. Blade, in particular, played a crucial role in shaping the character. Initially a human vampire hunter, the success of the movie led Marvel to transform him into a vampire.
A particular standout is Pyro, who makes a comeback after his last appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand. This time, he will finally don an outfit that closely resembles his original costume from the comic books.
Marvel will likely have many more hidden surprises and references in store for viewers before the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans will have to wait until July 26 to see all the new costumes that have been prepared.
Until then, you can stay updated on other upcoming Marvel movies such as Captain America 4 and The Fantastic Four.
