With the start of the fourth season of the Demon Slayer anime series earlier this month, fans were finally able to witness the much-awaited Hashira Training arc. As the name implies, this arc primarily delves into the Hashira and their role in training their subordinates, while also delving deeper into their personalities and backgrounds.
Without a doubt, Giyuu Tomioka will receive the most attention in this context among all the characters in Demon Slayer. The most recent episode of the series has already started this focus in a thrilling manner. In addition, as the story delves into Giyuu’s past, viewers were given a glimpse of his late sister Tsutako Tomioka, whose death was attributed to her sacrifice in protecting Giyuu.
Despite being mentioned briefly, numerous Demon Slayer fans are understandably perplexed about Tsutako’s identity and her significance in Giyuu’s life. Although there is minimal explanation about her role in the remaining events of the season, the implied revelations from the most recent episode can be analyzed to understand her role.
Demon Slayer: The Fate of Giyuu’s Sister, Tsutako Tomioka
As stated previously, the most recent installment of the Demon Slayer anime series formally debuted Tsutako Tomioka, who is believed to be Giyuu’s older sister. While her exact age is not disclosed, it is speculated that she was much older than Giyuu, as she was set to be married at the time of her passing, and Giyuu appears to be much younger in his flashback with Sabito.
Similarly, Tsutako’s fiance remains unnamed in the series, implying that he has no significant impact on her narrative in relation to Giyuu. However, there is limited knowledge about Tsutako as a whole, with the aforementioned details being the most reliable information available to fans. It is worth noting that she bears a striking resemblance to Giyuu, and often dons a dark red kimono and hakama with her chest visibly tied.
On the day before his wedding, Giyuu’s sister Tsutako made the ultimate sacrifice to protect him from a demon. This selfless act caused Giyuu to feel immense guilt for her death, to the point where he believed dying would be a better alternative. It is evident that Tsutako was a brave and caring sister, willing to give up her own life and potential future to ensure her brother’s safety.
Regrettably, there is limited knowledge available about Tsutako other than this. However, in the latest episode of the Demon Slayer anime, she indirectly influences Giyuu through Sabito’s words. By reminding Giyuu of her selfless sacrifice and how his conduct dishonors her decision, Sabito helps him understand the importance of her actions, ultimately resulting in Giyuu’s positive transformation.
Giyuu’s Family and His Unique Haori
Similarly, Sabito plays a crucial role in aiding Giyuu to understand the magnitude of his sister’s sacrifice, making it one of the most significant and influential moments in Demon Slayer. As a result, Giyuu is motivated to continue his training as one of the titular soldiers, ultimately setting the foundation for the start of the series. Unfortunately, this also brings about immense sorrow as Sabito tragically passes away during their Final Selection exam, leaving Giyuu to face the challenge alone.
This ultimately resulted in the development of his signature half and half haori, which has become a defining feature of his persona. The maroon half is a tribute to Giyuu’s sister Tsutako and the geometrically patterned half is a homage to his friend Sabito. This unique haori serves as a constant reminder of his purpose and the sacrifices made by his loved ones who guided him on his journey.
