I haven’t cried in a sports drama in a long time, but Unstoppable (2024) is a stunning piece of narrative that evokes an emotional response.

This emotional sports tale is not just about Robles’ incredible accomplishments, but also about his mother, Judy (Jennifer Lopez). It’s a heartfelt blend of a feel-good story and a deeply personal exploration.
Unstoppable follows Anthony during his high school and college years as he strives to join Arizona State University’s wrestling team, especially after dealing with the fallout of his stepdad, Rick (Bobby Cannavale), abandoning Judy and the family.
Anthony wishes to support his family and, despite Coach Shawn Charles’ (Don Cheadle) warnings about the challenges of being a walk-on, Anthony defies the odds.

Though it’s evident that Anthony will ultimately triumph over his final opponent, the path to that success makes the victory even more impactful. Post-viewing, I talked to many who admitted to tearing up multiple times, showcasing the script and Goldenberg’s direction that resonate emotionally.
Anthony and Rick’s strained relationship serves as a lens through which to examine masculinity, with Rick often lecturing about manhood.
Jerome showcases a simmering intensity towards Rick, demonstrating what being a good role model truly means through his actions.
This stands in stark contrast to Rick’s egotistical and volatile demeanor. Cannavale effectively brings out this unpleasant character, making Rick easy to disapprove of. Unstoppable crucially highlights the variety of father figures in Anthony’s life and what qualities are worth emulating.

Unstoppable doesn’t aim to redefine the sports drama genre, and that’s perfectly acceptable. It’s a well-constructed film that helps elevate its quality.
The performances are remarkable, with Jerome delivering a heartfelt portrayal that balances Anthony’s vulnerability and strength, creating a captivating character. Lopez shines as Judy, embodying a blend of sadness and resilience.
Cheadle consistently impresses, and Michael Peña’s role as Anthony’s high school coach offers charm and humor, adding depth to the narrative.
The pacing is excellent, drawing us quickly into Anthony’s world. Biopics often struggle to portray the humanity and achievements of their subjects, but Unstoppable succeeds in this endeavor.
This accomplishment is pivotal, as we understand Anthony’s core character and the reasons he fights to become a wrestling champion.
The obstacles he faces are complex and deeply personal, leading to a rich film that is beautiful, emotional, and at times intense, particularly during the wrestling matches that feel alive.
In one word, I would describe Unstoppable as defiant—just like Robles. It’s a film designed to tug at your heartstrings and evoke empathy for Anthony and Judy, who feel relatable.
Their relationship anchors the film, and when Anthony finally wins that national championship, I joined the on-screen audience in celebration.
