When Fallout 76 debuted in October 2018, it faced substantial criticism from fans. However, the developers have consistently engaged with the community regarding the game’s initial struggles and have worked diligently to rebuild support and enhance the overall experience.
In 2023, they introduced a wealth of content through the Atlantic City update, which opened a new area for players to explore.
Fast forward to September 3, 2024, and Fallout 76 launched its twelfth major update, Milepost Zero. This update introduces the most versatile and advanced base and outpost-building gameplay seen in the franchise, significantly expanding upon the original mechanics established in Fallout 4.
Players now have the ability to manage their own caravan company, complete with customization options and the need to defend it from potential threats.
Fallout 76 Milepost Zero Update: A Love Letter to Builders
As the first multiplayer title in the Fallout franchise, Fallout 76 has gradually established itself as a valuable addition to the acclaimed RPG series. It preserves the core essence of the Fallout experience while revitalizing it in a new format.
The development team shared that they dedicated the past seven months to crafting the Milepost Zero update prior to its September unveiling. Community feedback was the primary motivation behind selecting Milepost Zero as the next update.
Building has never been more expansive in a Fallout game.
The updated building mechanics serve as a prime example of how the developers have revitalized the previously controversial building system from Fallout 4, making it fresh and engaging for players.
“There’s a road that goes around the entire Skyline Valley region. We thought this would make a great spot for players to run caravan routes along due to the uncertainty and dangers of the new map addition,” they explained.
Additionally, the developers mentioned, “Since the Blueridge Caravan is such a popular faction within Fallout 76, the idea of allowing players to manage their own functioning caravan company was very appealing.”
While building has always been a feature in Fallout 76, Milepost Zero greatly expands on this element, with the developers indicating that “builders make up a huge portion of our player base” and they wanted to provide features that empower them even further.
New Best Builds Feature is a Game-Changer for the Community
Moreover, players will now be able to showcase their creations through the game’s new social feature, Best Builds.
Best Builds enables players to submit, visit, and rate various C.A.M.P.s (the term used for bases) across Adventure Mode servers. This new social feature includes a “like” button, allowing players to vote on the best builds each week.
The developers confirmed that the Best Builds feature will not have a comments section, either now or in the future, ensuring feedback remains “straightforward” and minimizing “opportunities for potentially offensive remarks.”
Although LaCoste and Rush remained tight-lipped about future competitions to celebrate the top builds, they indicated that discussions on the matter have occurred and urged players to “stay tuned.”
Ultimately, the developers view Milepost Zero as “the first major step towards connecting our builders within Fallout 76” and are eager to see player interactions, which will help shape future updates.
