Fallout’s Accidental Revelation: the Borderlands Movie is Doomed to Fail

The popularity of movies and TV shows based on games such as Fallout and Borderlands can be gauged not only by viewership, but also by game sales.

Despite initial indications of a potential failure, Borderlands is on track to become one of the biggest disappointments of the year, if not in recent history. The film’s initial 0% Rotten Tomatoes score foreshadowed its poor reception, and while it has since improved to a somewhat concerning 9%, it is still far from being considered a success.

However, there are alternate methods of measuring the success of a video game franchise, as demonstrated by UltraOZU, a TikTok user. As the owner of a vintage game shop, they pointed out a significant contrast between Borderlands and other popular video game franchises, such as Fallout on Prime Video.

According to the TikToker, his vintage game store currently has a plentiful supply of Borderlands games. However, he notes that when the shows featuring Fallout and Twisted Metal were released, the games sold out quickly. He proudly displays the first copy of Fallout: New Vegas that the store has received in months.

Despite positive reviews, the Borderlands movie highlights a larger issue – even those who enjoy it do not seem fully committed. Viewers are not leaving the theater with a desire to play the video games that served as the film’s inspiration.

Despite comparisons between digital and physical formats, it is not a clear distinction. While both Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition and Borderlands 3 have experienced an increase in player count (as reported by Steam tracking website SteamDB), it is not on the same level as the overwhelming numbers that Fallout 76 saw after the release of the Prime Video series.

Despite the apparent demise of the film franchise, there is some positive news for fans of the game as a fourth installment is reportedly in the works. However, the movie has only managed to earn less than $20 million, falling significantly short of its $110 million budget.
