Fans criticize the use of CGI in The Misfit of Demon King Academy anime

Despite being one of the best fantasy genre anime series, fans were unpleasantly surprised by the animation of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II part 2 episode 3, which was released on April 26, 2024.

In the episode, Anos’ class participated in a training exercise to hunt dragons while their teacher oversaw their progress. The test began with a simple race to a nearby tree, but quickly turned into a challenge as the students had to dodge relentless dragon attacks. However, there were also those who were pleasantly surprised by the nostalgia and even drew comparisons to the 2016 Berserk anime adaptation.

Reactions to the CGI dragons in The Misfit of Demon King Academy II part 2 episode 3

On April 26, 2024, the third episode of part 2 of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II was released. The episode showcased Anos Voldigord, the protagonist of the series, and his peers as they joined their teacher for dragon-slaying practice in a nearby field.

The teacher suggested that before beginning the main training, the students play a game of tag. However, three students began mocking the teacher. In response, the teacher challenged them to touch the nearby tree without using magic in under three minutes. As soon as the timer started, the students sprinted towards the tree.

Despite their proximity to the tree, a dragon suddenly emerged from the ground and propelled them through the air. The teacher then announced that their lesson for the day would revolve around evading being consumed by dragons. As long as the students were not devoured by the legendary creature, they were able to be revived, thus commencing the game.

Without giving any students a chance to make a move, Anos took the lead and drew the dragons towards himself. Once they were within his reach, he instructed them to kneel, and they obeyed. Anos then departed with them to their nest.

Despite this, it was the CGI of the dragons that left fans feeling disappointed. In fact, one X user, @AniNewsAndFacts, went as far as posting about its below-standard and unusual appearance.

The majority of the fandom drew comparisons between this poor CGI and the infamous 2016 anime adaptation of Berserk. The fandom has deemed the anime adaptation as one of the worst animated series.

Despite its below-par animation and CGI, among other things, the series also had sound effects that could easily be mistaken for random noises.

Despite The Misfit of Demon King Academy II’s CGI dragons, some fans have drawn comparisons to Arifureta, which is also widely regarded as one of the worst animated anime series. In both series, the use of CGI for the monsters was heavily criticized and contributed to a negative viewing experience for fans, with some even describing it as “torture.”In the end, Arifureta was deemed to be superior to The Misfit of Demon King Academy II in terms of its use of CGI dragons.

“Maybe Berserk 2016 is alright actually,”a fan claimed

“Nah berserk 2016 did better than this sh*t. Holy f*ck what did I watch,”another fan said

“Oh no. Arifuerta wasn’t even this bad,”a fan claimed

A group of fans expressed their disappointment with The Misfit of Demon King Academy II’s CGI dragons, deeming them unappealing. They argued that the use of amateurish animation was not acceptable. One fan boldly stated that the series had lost its initial charm after its first season, with both its animation and story falling below average.

One other fan argued that anime had declined in all aspects, including animation, storytelling, and other elements, placing the blame on the isekai genre.

“That is some disgusting cgi,”a fan claimed.

“Damn, this show has fallen since season 2 started,”another one claimed.

“Anime standards have fallen in just about every aspect. Animation, story, characters, lore, depth, style and varied fresh genres. I blame Isekai,”another fan said.

In the late 2010s, there has been a surge of isekai series released each season. This has caused some fans to believe that anime studios may be producing these series solely for profit, rather than focusing on the quality of animation. As evidenced by the reception of The Misfit of Demon King Academy II part 2 episode 3, it appears that many fans were dissatisfied.
