House of the Dragon viewers have had a change of heart regarding Otto Hightower, as the cunning schemer of King’s Landing has shown that he is not fully committed to Team Aegon.
Despite having to handle Jaehaerys’ funeral, a major fight between Erryk and Arryk, and Daemon’s exile, House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 2 managed to fit in Otto Hightower. This decision led to a complete change in opinion among fans of the Game of Thrones spinoff.
From the very beginning, Otto has been driven by ulterior motives. As Hand during Viserys’ rule, he quickly took advantage of the situation by overthrowing Rhaenyra and declaring Aegon as the new ruler.
Despite being viewed as an unlikable figure by Team Black supporters, this week has revealed a different side of Otto. His disagreement with Aegon and Criston Cole’s tactics and his suggestion that Aegon’s claim may not be legitimate has led to him being pitted against them, potentially changing how he is perceived.
According to a Reddit user, “I initially didn’t like him last season, but he has grown on me.”Another user added, “I usually can’t stand Otto, but today he was surprisingly accurate. Rhys is amazing.”
“Another person exclaimed, “Rhys is incredibly talented. His confident performance from the throne last week only solidified his place as one of my favorite actors.”
“I concur,”another chimed in. “I have a fondness for the cunning and strategic characters in this world who present themselves as logical thinkers, only to have their plans foiled by their own foolish family. Otto could be considered a lesser version of Tywin in this aspect.”
This leads to Aegon dismissing Otto from his position as Hand (to the dismay of many, the role is given to the widely despised Criston Cole), yet the majority of House of the Dragon viewers continue to support his decision.
One user expressed, “I thoroughly enjoyed watching him take down Aegon. And I equally enjoyed knowing that Otto was aware of his own wrongdoing.”This user went on to say that Otto had become their favorite character in the series due to his focus on promoting and preserving the greater good, which they found to be a refreshing trait.
“His acknowledgement that Viserys’ death and Aegon’s ascension had a negative impact on all of them was artfully portrayed. The revelation that he was anticipating job security added a new depth to his character. Truly well-written.”
