In addition to NCT Wish, SM Entertainment is planning to introduce more groups from Japan through a newly established production center in the country!
In the latest news, Masahiko Yamada, Director and Head of Corporate Planning at Stream Media Corporation, announced the company’s fiscal report for the period ending December 2024 in an article published by Logmi Finance.
In addition to reviewing its first quarter financial results, Yamada touched upon the impact of its merger with SM Entertainment Japan in August 2020 and the significant contribution of SM artists’ concerts to their overall growth.
“…They have had a very positive impact on our performance, Although these are difficult to reflect in business plans, our considerable efforts as a company have paid off in this area.”
Among the various topics covered by Director Yamada, the one that captivated the attention of SM stans the most was his response regarding SM Japan’s latest intellectual properties.
Stream Media has alluded to the possibility of creating their own original IPs in the Japanese market, in addition to debuting K-pop groups in the country.
“Until now, in the entertainment business, we have been using the method of bringing in the best-selling IP that debuted in Korea, but we believe that we need to go beyond that and create our own original IP. We are preparing to release an original IP in Japan.”
In regards to the preparation, Yamada stated that they have been getting ready for these groups for over 2 years. For the year 2024, they are finalizing the preparations and plan to debut the groups either by the end of this year or early in 2025.
“Of course, we would like to debut them within this year, but it is not that easy, so we are preparing several teams that will be active from the end of the year or the beginning of next year while working on exposure.
This is having a slight impact on our business performance, but we are making steady preparations.”
Additional information regarding the groups and their members will be provided before the end of this year. Currently, SM is making preparations for the debut of approximately three teams.
The new center, set to launch in 2025, will primarily manage Japan original IPs and oversee these groups.
Upon hearing the news, fans of SM artists, also known as Pink Bloods, had mixed reactions. While some were enthusiastic, as they have been eagerly anticipating the debut of many SM trainees in one of the three groups, others had differing opinions.
Despite mistreatment controversies involving its other groups, some K-pop fans of existing SM acts were frustrated with the label’s decision to launch new groups. They demanded that SM focus on their current groups and address their concerns before introducing new ones.
