After her portrayal of Lucy MacLean in the Fallout TV series, Ella Purnell has captured the interest of fans who were taken aback by her authentic voice.
Despite having a lengthy career in the entertainment industry, Purnell’s level of recognition has significantly increased in recent years due to her portrayal of Jackie in Yellowjackets.
Currently, her performance as Lucy, the optimistic and naive “Vaultie”in the TV adaptation of the popular video game Fallout on Amazon Prime Video, has been receiving commendation.
Since she speaks with a flawless American accent in both of these titles, it was presumed that this was her innate voice. However, during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, it was revealed for the first time that she is actually British.
During the conversation, Fallon himself acknowledged, “I’m impressed by your British accent… I’ve been acquainted with you and watched your work, and I’m a huge admirer, but you also have a great American accent.”
Following her expression of gratitude, Purnell acknowledges her dialect coach Coley. When inquired about whether or not people are taken aback by her British roots, she responds, “Occasionally, which I consider to be the greatest compliment.”
At the age of 15 or 16, I recall my first experience of performing an American accent in a film. I was determined to do it like the seasoned actors and maintain the accent throughout the entire production. However, being young and still learning, I was still figuring it all out at that time.
After approximately three weeks of this, she became exhausted and made the decision to speak in her original accent. The only issue? Her co-star remained skeptical that she was truly British.
“I jokingly had to demonstrate my Englishness to him,”she quips. “Initially, it was pleasant, but as time went on, I found myself making him cups of tea and listening to Kings & Queens.”
It is evident that her American accent is convincing since several fans have taken to social media to express their surprise upon discovering her true voice.
Upon discovering that Ella Purnell is British, one person exclaimed, “Wait, Ella Purnell is British?!”Another person shared a similar sentiment, tweeting, “Ella Purnell being English really surprised me.”
A third person remarked, “Is Ella Purnell really English??????”And a fourth person joined in, stating, “I am having a hard time believing that Ella Purnell is actually English. Her American accent is consistently impressive.”
