Despite the sadness surrounding the end of the beloved series, fans of My Hero Academia are still holding onto hope for a possible sequel or spin-off. However, as of now, there is no confirmation of either, leaving fans with an unfortunate answer to their burning question.
Did the Creator of My Hero Academia Hint at a Spin-off?
During an interview with Viz Media, Kohei Horikoshi was questioned about his potential plans for character development and storylines. He responded that it is not a matter of opportunity, as he already has certain characters and their backgrounds prepared, but chose not to include them in the current plot.

Before Deku, One For All was possessed by a total of eight individuals. It first resided in Shigaraki Yoichi and was then passed down to Kudo, Bruce, Hikage, Daigoro, En, Nana, and Toshinori. All Might is a well-known character, leading us to believe that Horikoshi must have mentioned the seven previous users. However, the story does not delve into much detail about them other than their abilities, making a spin-off for each user a highly anticipated read.
Despite having the stories prepared, Horikoshi promptly hit the breaks and acknowledged that he may never execute them due to his preference for hinting at their backstories instead of fully illustrating them. He uses Terminator 2 as an example to clarify his rationale.
For instance, in Terminator 2, John Connor becomes a leader in the future, and Schwarzenegger’s character is sent from that future world. But there aren’t many depictions of the future itself. Because the future isn’t depicted in detail, the viewers’ imaginations expand, and I thought that was really great.
Horikoshi’s intention is to allow readers the freedom to interpret without explicitly stating everything. Therefore, we are given the liberty to develop our own theories and be imaginative with the lore.
Is there a possibility of a My Hero Academia Spin-Off Sequel by Horikoshi?
In his interview, Horikoshi expresses his strong opposition to the idea of a spin-off series for My Hero Academia. He encourages us to let our imaginations roam freely instead of being confined to predetermined background stories. (However, little does he realize, the alternate-reality tag cannot be stopped.)

On August 5, 2024, My Hero Academia’s creator, Kohei Horikoshi, made a rare announcement through an ad in the New York Times, one of the most influential publications in the Western world. In the ad, Horikoshi thanked the series’ widespread fanbase for their unwavering support and also revealed a global character popularity poll, a notable event for a manga series.
Despite the high expectations surrounding the teased announcement, fans were disappointed to learn that it was not a sequel, spin-off, or new work by Horikoshi. Nevertheless, the fact that My Hero Academia has been recognized by the New York Times is a clear indication of its significant impact on the entertainment industry and its devoted fan community.
Should We Give Up Hope?
Despite not having any immediate plans for a spin-off or sequel, it’s worth considering that time has the power to change both people and circumstances, and nothing is set in stone. It’s possible that Kohei Horikoshi could have a change of heart in the future and decide to create a sequel, or perhaps even release additional spin-offs featuring other characters for fans to enjoy.
