Based on Chosun’s report, it is probable that the authorities will opt for written proceedings instead of a public trial due to the relatively mild charges against the three individuals.
Son Woong-jung and two other coaches from the football academy “Son Soccer”have been accused of mistreating C, a trainee at the academy. According to C, Coach Son Heung-yoon physically attacked them during a coaching camp in Okinawa, Japan in March. Furthermore, C has reported being subjected to verbal abuse from Son Woong-jung and other coaches since November 2023 for making mistakes during training and matches.
According to South Korean media, a video has been released exposing coaches at Son Soccer making inappropriate comments towards trainees. The coaches can be seen reprimanding and using foul language towards trainees who struggled with handling the ball.
Following the publicity of the incident, Son Woong-jung released a sincere apology and stated that there was no intention of malice.
“Although we acknowledge that our actions were unlawful, I want to assure you that every decision and word spoken by the coaches at the academy was done with love for the children. Our teachings were based on our personal principles.”
Son Heung-min’s success is often credited to his father, Son Woong-jung. In a recent interview, Son revealed that his father’s strict training played a crucial role in his development as an exceptional player.
Although Son Woong-jung was highly regarded in the field of youth training in South Korea, the recent incident has significantly damaged his reputation and also had a negative impact on the reputation of Son Heung-min.
