Fifth-Gen K-Pop Idol Shares How Anime Inspired Her to Read the Bible

A member of the fifth generation of K-pop idols disclosed that her passion for a particular anime led her to read The Bible in one sitting.

The YouTube channel MUSINA TV uploaded a video titled “QWER Chodan & Magenta explain the world of geeks with KIOF Julie & Haneul”on July 18, 2024.

During the video, special guests Chodan and Magenta from QWER joined Kiss Of Life’s Julie and host Haneul. They discussed their shared interests in otaku culture, including anime and manga. Since Haneul is the only member of Kiss Of Life who is familiar with anime, the show aimed to introduce Julie to the world of otaku.

Magenta’s love for the Japanese mecha anime franchise “Neon Genesis Evangelion”was revealed during the show, as she passionately expressed her deep admiration for it. She elaborated on how the show incorporates themes from Christianity, which led her to immerse herself in reading The Bible. It was clear that her obsession with “Neon Genesis Evangelion”knew no bounds.

According to her statement,

“I was so obsessed with ‘Evangelion’ that I read the entire Bible. The universe of ‘Evangelion’ is… This goes kind of deep, but… It has strong biblical references. So, I binge-read The Bible.”

Julie and Haneul were equally taken aback by her remark, with Haneul playfully pointing out the oddity of combining “binge-reading”and “The Bible”in one sentence. Chodan, a member of QWER like them, couldn’t resist nodding in agreement.

The video of Magenta discussing her reasons for reading The Bible became an instant sensation on various social media sites, including X (formerly Twitter). Her commitment to reading the 1,200-page book surprised many, who noted that it would take anywhere from 65 to 75 hours to complete.

Many also quipped that, just as “Neon Genesis Evangelion”is the anime adaptation, The Bible could be seen as the source material in manga form. And, like any devoted otaku, she was determined to uncover all the lore of her beloved series! Some noted that while it may be common to read The Bible, binge-reading it required a significant level of commitment and fixation.
